"WHAT DO YOU MEAN, YOU'RE 'STAYING AT TANNYHILL'?" Kiara's voice had an undercurrent of disgust which lingered as she weaved around them, bussing tables.
JJ sucked in a dramatic breath.
"I think," he drawled, "And correct me if I'm wrong here, bro." JJ pointed at John B, a smirk playing on his lips. "He means he's staying at Tannyhill."
Without missing a beat, Kiara grabbed his soda out of his hands and put it back on her tray, shooting him an angry glare.
"Hey!" JJ whined. "I paid good money for that."
Kiara snorted, but it lacked humour. "No, you didn't."
JJ rolled his eyes. Kiara put the soda down in front of him with a little more force than necessary, some of it sloshing over the edge of the cup.
John B cleared his throat, and rapped the knuckles of his unbroken hand against the table.
"Order, order," he boomed. Kiara floated off to somewhere else in the restaurant, clearly resolved to keep avoiding him. It was funny, Lucy thought, how quickly everyone slipped into their usual rhythms.
Funny how they could ignore the fact that Sarah's stolen survey map of Tannyhill was sitting on the table in front of John B like an undetonated grenade.
"So, as I was saying," John B tried again, "I'm staying at Tannyhill. Ward's given me my own room and everything." Lucy's eyebrows crept towards the sky. If there was one thing she knew about Ward Cameron, it was that he didn't do anything without a goal in mind.
"But Ken, if you're here..." JJ's voice was panicked, his face pallid. John B fixed him with a flat stare, waiting for the inevitable punchline. "...where's Barbie?" JJ guffawed. Lucy levelled him with a matching expression to John B, and he raised his hands, feigning innocence. "It's a compliment!"
Kiara materialised out of nowhere. "Don't compliment her. She's a snake, and she will bite all of us." She pointed a finger slowly around the group. "Do not fall for her shit." Lucy bristled at that.
"Kiara, stop it." Her voice was weak, but the other girl still looked over.
"Oh, really?" Kiara leaned back, a hand on her hip. "Sarah's dug her claws into one of my best friends, just like you two did to me — sorry for wanting to protect him from what I know comes next." John B's head fell forwards into his hands, and he let out a groan.
"Okay, look," he said, putting a fist down on the table with a little more force than necessary, "the only reason I'm living there is because her dad bailed me out."
