LUCY BRACED FOR AWKWARDNESS AS SHE WALKED BACK TOWARDS THE LIVING ROOM. Nerves thrummed beneath her skin. Lucy adjusted the t-shirt so it hung loosely on her frame, the hem just brushing the tops of her thighs. She didn't want him to look at her like he had earlier, right? She cleared her throat, announcing her presence.
"Are you decent?" Her voice was not much more than a whisper, and she heard a low laugh from the other side of the doorframe.
"Never." Lucy bit her bottom lip to keep from smiling. She placed her hands over her eyes as she took her first steps into the room, peeking between the gaps in her fingers. When she saw that JJ was indeed tucked in on the couch, she let her hands drop, arms folding across her chest.
It was interesting that this was Kiara's idea of JJ 'bitching and moaning' - he seemed to have taken the couch without even complaining once.
"Get up. Let me take the couch." Her tone was as stern as she could make it.
He shook his head. "Nope, not happening."
"JJ, come on." Lucy took a few more steps towards him, and pulled at the threadbare blanket he'd draped over himself, thinking she could force him up.
Big mistake.
The blanket fell away to reveal swathes of tanned skin. Sharp ridges of muscle were clear on his stomach. Her mouth was suddenly dry.
"I'm being totally selfish, princess," JJ replied, eyes gleaming in the low light. For a moment, Lucy thought she saw hunger there, but he blinked and it was gone. "This couch is way comfier than any of the beds."
"Oh, really?" One of her eyebrows quirked up and she leaned back, crossing her arms.
"Yep," he responded.
She crossed her arms even tighter, trying to look annoyed.
"I'm not letting you sleep out here just so you can play hero," Lucy said. JJ raised his eyebrows at her. He scoffed, and let his head fall back dramatically against the armrest.
"Look, it's not a big deal. You'll toss and turn all night on this thing, and at least this way I don't have to listen to you complain about your neck in the morning." A laugh snuck through her lips before she could stop it, and his face lit up. "Like I said. Totally selfish." JJ folded his arms behind his head, the image of pure relaxation.
Lucy rolled her eyes. "You're impossible."
"And you're stalling. If you want the couch that badly," he gestured around himself lazily with an arm, "You can always join me." He patted the empty space (all ten inches of it) next to him, and his white teeth glinted as he grinned at her.
