Born with the right name, on the other hand, and you were set for life from the minute you popped out of the womb into whatever luxury hospital money could buy.

That was how Lucinda Cavendish saw it.

Kildare County had one hell of a hierarchy, and she was at the top. Ward Cameron may have busted his ass up from the Cut, but the Cavendish family had old money with dubious origins, all trickling down from one generation of selfish bastards to the next.

Of course, that changed when Lucy was born. An only child, and a girl, and the end of the Cavendish line — that was where Rafe Cameron came in. Her parents couldn't have asked for a more perfect arrangement to prevent the complete extinction of their family line. A relationship of convenience. Lucy's future had been decided for her, the subject of hundreds of hushed meetings between her parents and the Camerons behind closed doors.

Rafe Cameron and Lucinda Cavendish. The heir and heiress to the OBX throne. Practically royalty. They were the type of couple that went without question.

A lot of things went without question in the Outer Banks. No one questioned the bruises that ringed Lucy's wrists, or the hickeys that looked a little too much like fingerprints. No one questioned the fact that Lucy snuck out of Rafe's room every night to share a bed with his sister Sarah instead. No one questioned Rafe or Lucy, because they were Rafe and Lucy. Most people knew better than to try.

No one had questioned the location of the missing millions in gold for years either, until a group of kids started poking around where they didn't belong.
