"FOR THE RECORD, I STILL THINK THIS IS A BAD IDEA," LUCY ANNOUNCED. She was wheeling her borrowed bike through the undergrowth, twigs crunching underfoot as the two girls made their way towards the Chateau.
Sarah just shrugged.
"John B said it would be fine."
Lucy knew the comment was meant as a throwaway, but it stung to be dismissed so easily.
"I'm not joking," Lucy continued, "John B is thinking with something other than his brain if he's seriously expecting Kiara to just roll over." She accompanied the statement with a pointed look that her best friend expertly avoided.
Lucy knew exactly what John B was thinking with.
She also had a suspicion this was the day that the tentative trust she'd built with JJ and the Pogues would go up in flames, if it hadn't already. All in all, the temptation to turn on her heel and run screaming was overwhelming.
But Sarah needed her, so she would stay.
And if she had her own reasons for staying, she would fold those deep down in her chest so no one could see them.
"Sarah!" A familiar voice came from somewhere up ahead, and her best friend squealed, picking up the pace. Maybe Sarah didn't need Lucy quite so much, after all.
"John B!" Sarah flung her arms around the boy, her bike falling to the side, wheels spinning helplessly. John B lifted her off the ground, spinning her around. Lucy felt a pang of longing in her gut. It had ben a long time since she was held like that, if she ever even had been.
Sarah continued to speak when she reached the ground once more, her voice breathless. "So, you found the gold?" John B nodded smugly, before shooting Lucy a grateful glance.
"Mhm," he mumbled, taking a step towards Lucy, "Thanks for your help, Lucy." She shrugged.
"It was nothing," she waved a hand to dismiss him, "Just sorry it's under an axe murderer's house." John B grinned.
"It's worse than that, actually."
Sarah piped up. "Worse how?" John B's head whipped around to speak to her, ever the lovesick fool.
He lowered his voice to a conspiratorial whisper, and Lucy had to lean in to hear him. "It's in a super sketchy deep well." Sarah's laugh tinkled like a bell.
"That's ideal," she said with a smile, before it faded from her face, "Kinda wish we'd been with you guys." Sarah gestured towards Lucy, who nodded. Strangely, it didn't feel like much of a lie, despite the fact that at the start of this summer, breaking and entering would have been the furthest thing from her mind.
