"WHEEZIE'S NEVER ALLOWED TO DRINK, EVER AGAIN." Lucy's best friend walked down the Tannyhill stairs, a disgusted expression on her face. "Be thankful you're an only child." Lucy nearly laughed at the irony of that statement. She would take holding her little sister's hair back as she retched into a toilet over her current situation in a heartbeat.
"That bad, huh?"
"Worse." This time, Lucy did laugh, watching as Sarah sniffed her hand, making sure that the traces of vomit were completely gone. "There's a silver lining, though."
"Oh yeah?"
"Mmhmm. She's covering for us tonight." Sarah's expression was one of glee, but Lucy was just confused. Her mind had been rather taken up by how to explain to Sarah that her boyfriend was the one who got John B fired, and had decidedly not been set on their party plans.
"Tonight?"
"Kelce's party, dumbass." Recognition sparked in Lucy's mind.
As she was about to respond, though, another voice entered the mix. A voice from outside.
"What do you want me to say?" The laughter died on Lucy's lips.
Lucy would've been able to recognise that voice anywhere, she thought, especially when it was filled with barely-restrained anger as it was now. Rafe Cameron. Hastily, she held a finger to her lips and beckoned Sarah over, the two of them crowded in next to each other by the door, ears straining to hear the conversation.
"I don't want you to say shit, Rafe." Ward, apparently, was the other party in the discussion, and Lucy looked to Sarah, finding only worry in her eyes. "I want you to prove you give a damn and take care of business."
"Then I will!" Rafe sounded irate, in stark contrast to Ward's calm façade.
"Where are the generators?" Ward's voice was cold. Lucy stiffened. She knew what Rafe had done with the generator money, knew because when she tried to convince him to use it for the generators, he had laughed in her face. She really was useless, wasn't she? Couldn't even convince her supposed boyfriend to to something as small as buy a fucking backup generator. "I gave you money for the generators." Lucy felt Sarah's hand come to rest around her wrist, the pair half holding hands as they awaited the outcome of this altercation. Lucy was grateful for the comfort.
After all, if the heir to the Outer Banks fell from grace, Lucy would too. And without Rafe, who would she be? Lucy didn't know the answer to that question.
