"REMIND ME WHY WE'RE HERE AGAIN?"

Lucy stabbed another piece of trash, scooping it up and into the half-full bag by her side. The sun was bearing down on them, harsh on their backs, and Lucy knew that while Sarah would tan golden, she would probably be bright red by the end of this particular outing. She paused to contemplate Sarah's question.

"Saving the turtles." Lucy responded, and Sarah sighed, yet another plastic bottle falling victim to the ruthless path of Sarah and Lucy's beach cleanup.

"Fuck the turtles." Lucy barked out a laugh.

"You— Wow." Lucy grinned at her best friend with a small shake of her head, incredulous.

The pair kept moving forwards, the long stretch of beach seemingly endless. Topper was nowhere to be found, having been stuck to Sarah's side earlier until she had accepted his rather profuse apology. Their run-in with John B seemed to have made Sarah see Topper's side of things.

For the most part, Lucy was confused. Somehow, Ward had found out about John B's scuba poaching, and he'd fired the kid because of it. That part added up well enough. Ward had never been one to favour dishonesty from those he kept close. The part that didn't make sense, however, was how Ward had found out in the first place. Clearly, Lucy and Sarah were prime suspects, and John B knew it. They'd seen him at Ground Zero, caught red-handed at the scene of the crime. In his mind, Lucy knew there was no doubt that the two girls were little more than entitled Kooks who would sell out one of their servants over a couple bars of air.

The Kook stereotype tended to be useful in more ways than one — a definite lifesaver when it came to the purchase of illegal alcohol and other assorted goods — but Lucy had a feeling this was one place where it was doing more harm than good.

After all, what did either of them have to gain by getting John B fired?

Still, Lucy was pretty sure that very few people in the Outer Banks kept their word, so she wasn't entirely affronted that John B didn't trust them. If she were him, Lucy doubted she'd trust them either.

Lucy was pulled from her thoughts by a shoulder bumping hers.

"What're you thinking about?" Sarah's voice had a carefree lilt to it. Sand, sun, and sea always seemed to be able to make her best friend feel better. She simply shrugged in response.

"How do you think he found out?"

"Who? Dad?" Lucy nodded, and Sarah furrowed her brow. "Who cares?" Lucy pursed her lips, thinking. Come to think of it, she didn't really know why she cared.
