A SCREAM PUNCTURED THE CALM OF THE NIGHT, ROUSING LUCY IN AN INSTANT. Groggy, bleary-eyed, she looked around the unfamiliar room. All the shadows were jagged, twisting darkened corners into enemies Lucy couldn't run from, and some she knew all too well.

Silence settled over the house again. The soft melody of insects chirping outside was ominous, rather than soothing. She sat up in the bed, drawing the covers in closer to her chest, the only small comfort she would allow herself as her heart raced. She winced as the springs of the mattress groaned beneath her, and spared a glance to the door.

Only then did Lucy realise the scream had been her own.

Slowly, oh-so-carefully, she moved to the edge of the bed, bare feet touching down softly on the old wooden floorboards. She pulled the blanket she had been using around her shoulders to keep herself warm, Fear had always been a good companion to her in the early hours of the morning, good enough that she knew exactly what to do. It always crept up through her belly and forced itself through her lips in the same way.

First, hope she had not woken the others in the house. Second, get outside.

Her feet padding softly across the living room floor, she spared a glance towards the sandy-haired, bullish boy lying on the sofa he had fought so hard to keep her from taking. His presence was strangely grounding, in the same way that his hand on her wrist had been. She felt a soft smile cross her face, despite her best efforts.

Lucy furrowed her brow, forcing thoughts of JJ's skin on hers from her mind. It had just been a long time since she had been touched by caring hands instead of harsh ones. That was all it was. She crossed the rest of the living room and pushed the front door open before she could give it another thought. The door creaked and she winced as it announced her departure, but oh well. Too late now. Sometimes, she hated that her first instinct was to hide. Not fight, not scream, just disappear.

The sky was a soft shade of yellow that promised a beautiful sunrise.

Even so, the weight of the nightmare still clung to her chest like a second skin she couldn't shake off. The early morning chill reminded her that she was awake, and as she stepped barefoot onto the porch outside, her eyes locked on to the water in the distance. In the morning light, it shimmered gold and grey and violet, and she knew she needed to be near it.

Lucy crossed the lawn, the cold of the morning dew biting into her skin. With every moment that passed, she felt more awake. More herself. It had just been a dream.

She stepped off the grass onto the weathered boards of the small dock at the end of the Chateau's front yard. The water lapped gently against its supports, a comforting noise. The sky was beginning to light up, pale yellow bleeding into pink and orange.
