a lot of things go unnoticed in the outer banks. things like missing millions in gold, underage drinking, and the bruises that litter the skin of the kook princess.

"DO YOU WANNA GET OUT OF HERE?"
Sarah entered the living room as though a hurricane had hit. Oh, she was angry. Lucy furrowed her brow.
"What's up?" Sarah groaned, shaking her head.
"Don't ask," she replied, arms crossed over her chest, "Topper." Lucy murmured a noise of understanding. "God, I just— he's just insane!" Lucy gave a half-smile. She knew her best friend well enough that she knew when Sarah said 'don't ask', it meant she was about to tell you all about it. "He accused me, get this, of flirting with John B." Sarah's eyes were narrow.
"Interesting," Lucy answered, her tone light, "Were you?"
"No!"
"Well, that's good to hear." Lucy's voice had a wry humour to it. Her best friend shot her a glare.
"I just wish he'd trust me," Sarah said, dejected, "Like, he doesn't even know about the others." Lucy raised her eyebrows. She found Sarah's ability to speak about her past boyfriends with such flippant disregard somewhat admirable. "And he nearly killed John B at the kegger, so it's not like he's the ideal boyfriend! It's like he thinks he owns me." She finished her rant, collapsing into the nearest chair with a disgruntled exhale.
"I know the feeling." The humour in her voice was gone. Sarah's eyes snapped to hers. neither one of them really spoke, the silence settling in the air. "Come on. We'll go out." Lucy walked over to her friend, snatching her car keys from the desk as she did so. When she reached Sarah's chair, she paused, holding out a hand expectantly. Sarah smiled.
"Where are we going?"
"Wherever you want."
The pair walked outside in silence, hands linked.
The car lights flashed once, the vehicule unlocking.
"Shotgun!" Sarah called out happily.
"Are you making me DD again?" The other girl nodded, and Lucy rolled her eyes. "Fine."
Climbing in, the girls were quick to leave Tannyhill behind. Neither one of them wanted to be there right now.
Sarah rolled her window down, the sea wind blowing through their hair, the sort of wind that only came with driving fast down coastal roads. Lucy laughed, the sound ringing through the air.
She had always liked driving in the Outer Banks. It was something about the hum of the road beneath the car's wheels, the salt in the air, the sheer liberty of it all. When she was driving in the Outer Banks, Lucy could almost convince herself that she was free.
