LUCY HAD NEVER BEEN IN A JAIL BEFORE, BUT HEY, THERE WAS A FIRST TIME FOR EVERYTHING.

Her wallet felt heavy in her back pocket, one foot bouncing incessantly as she waited at the front desk.

"Lucy." A familiar voice came from behind her, and she turned to face Deputy Shoupe with her best I-can-do-no-wrong smile. "Here to confess to any other crimes?" The smile faltered. His tone was jovial enough, but the words certainly didn't land as a joke to Lucy.

"No, Deputy," she responded, "That was a one-off." He scoffed.

"Don't like to see you hanging around with that lot," Shoupe grumbled, "You're a smart girl. You shouldn't be out on the Cut." He moved behind the desk, shuffling papers as he went. "How's Rafe? Sarah? The Camerons have always been good kids." He seemed to have conveniently forgotten that Rafe had been there at the scene of the arrest, cheering him on.

She knew he meant well, but still Lucy bristled at the implication that there was some fundamental divide between us and them. She supposed it had been that way for as long as she had lived in the Outer Banks, but it wasn't often that she heard it so overtly expressed.

"They're both good, thanks, Deputy. Enjoying summer." She worried her bottom lip between her teeth, feeling out of place in the conversation.

"What are you here for, anyway?" His eyes flickered up to hers for a second, finding nothing of note as his hands continued busily sorting files. "I told your dad I'll try to make it next weekend, but no promises." Lucy nearly laughed. Her parents' constant dinner parties were the least of her worries right about now.

"Actually," she started, words getting caught in her throat, "I'm here to visit JJ Maybank." The Deputy's hand stopped dead in the air, his eyes finding hers, surprise clear on his face. That was only part of her plan, but Lucy figured she should start small.

"Really?" She nodded. The Deputy shrugged, feigning relaxation, but the set of his jaw gave him away. "Suit yourself. But if it's all the same to you, I don't feel right not telling your parents about this. I'm gonna give them a call, okay?" She hesitated, and Shoupe's eyes lit up with success. Lucy had a sneaking suspicion her parents would be getting a call regardless of her decision. Slowly, his hands moved back towards the files on his desk. He was itching to get her out of here.

She'd come this far. Why stop now?

"That's alright," Lucy replied, voice laced with kindness. The Deputy went slack-jawed. That wasn't the response he had been expecting.

"Okay then," he continued slowly, "Come on through. The Sheriff should be done with him by now." She smiled at him, wide and bright. Underneath it, though, she was wondering why JJ had been interrogated.
