The Mini Badass

Chapter 8

The men of the group walk in first, they're guns raised. The place is empty and clean. No bodies, no blood. Nothing.

The cocking of a gun makes all of us jump. I turn towards the noise seeing a blonde man with his run raised at us.

"Anybody infected?" He asks as Lori's grip on me tightens.

"One of our group was." Rick says and I wish I could slap him. "He didn't make it." 

"Why are you here?" The man asks slowly walking closer to us. "What do you want?"

"A chance."

"That's asking an awful lot these days." The man says, still inching towards our group.

"I know." Rick says before the man's eyes wander around the group for a moment, stopping on each one of our faces.

"You all submit a blood test." The man tells us and I sense Carl tense up. "That's the price of admission."

"We can do that." Rick complies, lowering his weapon.

The man lowers his before quickly marching towards us. "You got stuff to bring in you do it now."

"Once this door closes, it stays closed."

Rick, Glenn and Daryl all run out to our cars to grab our supplies. They get back quickly and moments later the doors are shut.

"Rick Grimes." Rick says to the man, sticking his hand out. 

"Dr. Edwin Jenner." The man tells him before shaking his hand.

"Follow me!" Dr. Jenner tells the rest of the group. He leads us to an elevator and after we all squish in he hits a button and we start moving.

"Doctors always go round packing heat like that?" Daryl asks, breaking the very awkward silence.

"There were plenty left laying around. I familiarized myself." Doc says as I restrain from hitting Rick as he's breathing very loudly.

"You lot look harmless enough." Dr. Jenner says, taking a quick glance at each of us. "Except you." He says, looking at Carl.

"I'll have to keep my eye on you." Doc tells him and I see a small smile grow on Carl's face.

Moments later the elevator doors open and we all start walking down a long hallway.

"Are we underground?"

"You claustrophobic?" Dr. Jenner asks Carol who nods. "A little."

"Try not to think about it." Doc advises as we reach a large dark room.

"VI, bring up the lights in the big room." Dr. Jenner orders air but seconds later the lights are on.

I look over to Carl, who turns to me, just as confused.

"Welcome to Zone 5." Dr. Jenner tells us walking farther into the computer room.

"Where is everybody?" Rick asks following the doctor. "The other doctors, the staff?"

"I'm it."

"It's just me here." He tells us, stopping in the middle of a circle of computers.

"What about the person you were speaking with?" I ask stepping away from Lori and Carl. "VI?"

"VI! Say hello to our guests." Dr. Jenner orders the celling. "Tell them, welcome."

"Hello guest, welcome." A voice says and I stumble back to Lori.

"Jesus?" I whisper to myself, still very confused.

"I'm all that's left."

"I'm sorry." Dr. Jenner apologizes.
