Donna the Magnificent

The first week of school went by a lot faster than anyone would of expected. Valerie had needed Finney's help on the math homework and Finney needed Valerie's help for the "All About Me" essay. He knew how to write but he didn't understand the formatting.

Finney, Robin, and Valerie had started sitting together at lunch. They barely ever ate anyways, they were always laughing at the weird faces Finney would make.

Valerie had tried getting Donna to sit with them too, but she wanted to sit with her friends, which was understandable. The two girls had sat next to each other in science class so they got to talk a lot. Valerie enjoyed Donna's company. She was nice and always wore a smile.

It was finally Sunday and Finney had a baseball game. Valerie tries her best to make it to his games but her work shifts don't finish until halfway through. She knows how passionate Finney is about baseball so she feels guilty when she can't make it.

"That's gonna be $3.84." she said, getting a brown paper bag from under the counter. She took the $5 bill and placed it in the register. She calculated the change and placed it in the bag along with the chips and medicine the customer had bought. "Have a nice day."

Valerie sighed and looked at the clock. 15 minutes. The bell on the door rang and in walked Robin. He came over to the check out after a few minutes of searching. As he placed the snacks on the counter he looked at the girl that stood before him.

"Hey, sorry if I was being creepy earlier this week." he placed his hand on the back of his neck and sighed. The girl just hummed in response. "When I was staring at you.. on Monday." Valerie snapped her fingers at him. "That's alright. I didn't even notice." she smiled and calculated the price.

"$7.35 please." Robin rummaged through his pockets, only finding a 5 and two 1's. "Hmm.. you're .35 short. Gotta put something back, cowboy." He scoffed at her remark. "Cowboy? Can't you just let it slide?" She put her finger over her lip like she was thinking. "No can do. Unless you want me to get in trouble with my boss." She waved to an older man who had been watching her every move. Totally not creepy.

"Whatever." he snatched a candy bar and went to put it back. Valerie felt an inch of guilt in her stomach as she watched the boy sulk back to the counter. "Sorry.." Robin looked into her eyes. "It's fine. You're just doing you're job."

Valerie grabbed a paper bag and placed the snacks inside as well as the .20 in change. She folded the top and handed it to him. "What's the occasion? Or do you just eat a bunch of chips by yourself?" Robin scoffed. "Why is it so bad for someone to eat 3 bags of chips by himself?" Valerie grinned at him. "I'm going to Finn's game and I got him some stuff as a sorry for being late."

Wow... he's sweet. "How cute. Now skedaddle, don't want to hold up the line do you?" He turned around to see 2 very annoyed people standing behind him. Robin flicked his head towards the door to indicate he was leaving now. Valerie furrowed her brows at him and smiled.

It was finally the end of Valerie's shift. She grabbed her bag and went to head out. She stopped at the door and turned around. She grabbed the candy bar Robin had put back earlier and bought it for him as a sorry.

Gwen was sitting with Robin and two other girls. Valerie walked up to her and sat down next to Robin. She hit his shoulder with the candy bar, which caught his attention. He took it from her with a smile.

Finney was up at bat. He stood in place as the pitcher threw the ball. He hit it perfectly and ran to first base, just barely making it in time. "Yes, Finney!" Gwen shouted. The curly haired boy looked to his sister and waved. He caught his gaze on something else not long after.

Valerie followed his eyes which led her straight to Donna. She chuckled and looked down at her hands. The batter missed the first pitch which got a lot of boos and cheers from the crowd. He got lucky and hit the second pitch. It was a great one too. A home run. "Go Finney! Run!" Valerie jumped up. "Run Finney Run!"

He slid back to home in no time. Gwen and Valerie high fived each other and Valerie gave Finney a big thumbs up and a smile, to which he returned.

After the game, Finney came over to the group. "Finney, that was awesome!" Gwen hugged her brother. Valerie nodded her head to him as a congratulations on winning the game since she couldn't hug him. Donna came up to Finney and congratulated him. It was short and sweet and ended with a kiss on the cheek.

Finney's heart skipped a beat and his face turned red. Valerie couldn't help but laugh and pull Donna away. "So.. you and Finn?" she asked, elbowing her arm. "Yeah.. I guess. I mean, I want it to happen, but I don't know how he feels.." Donna sighed and looked at her shoes. "Trust me, he feels the same about you. Has for a while." Valerie smiled at the unsure girl.

"Donna, let's go!" Donna said goodbye to Valerie as she walked to her mom. Valerie just stood there and watched as the girl and her mom walked off. She sighed, thinking about all the baseball games her and Christine used to go to. Not here, but at a big stadium. Christine had a love for baseball. She would always outplay the boys at recess and brag about it to all her friends. Valerie walked back over to her friends after reminiscing. "She's amazing! Donna's magnificent!" Finney exclaimed.
