Leaving Denver
The three people stood up from the couch and looked at each other before looking at the girl. "Why.. why are you here?" She looked to her mother, taking deep breaths to calm herself. The older woman was stood in the hallway with her arms crossed.
"Sweetie.." he walked over to the girl slowly, trying not to alarm her. "Me and your mother have decided to get a divorce." Her gaze switched between her two parents. She swallowed and took a step backwards. "I know it seems alarming that I'm here all of a sudden, but you're going to be okay. We're going to go to Idaho together and you'll be okay."
Valerie's back hit the wall as she began to tear up. "H-how.. why am I going with you?"
"I spent these two years proving myself. I found a good job, a good house on a friendly street with a great school not too far away. You'll love it."
She pointed to the two men still in the living room. "Who.. who are they?" her voice was quivering with fear and hurt. She didn't want to leave her mother and her friends behind. She didn't want to leave Robin behind. "They're our lawyers. We're discussing the soonest date to finalize the divorce. The sooner it happens, the sooner we can leave this shit hole."
Tears were streaming down Valerie's face as she ran into her mother's arms. "They're thinking that you'll be leaving next week." her mother whispered into her hair. "What! Wouldn't a divorce take months?" She let go of her mother and wiped her eyes. "How long has this been planned?"
"8 months.."
She shook her head in disbelief. How could they not tell their own daughter that they were getting divorced? How could they hide this from her for 8 months? Valerie had always known that her parents had a rocky relationship. They're constant fights late at night didn't hide that. After Christine died, they got worse, to the point where her dad up and left.
She ran for the door but her father grabbed her arm, pulling her into a hug. "Let me go! Stop it!" she was sobbing now. "I don't want this!" She broke free from his grip and ran out the door. She didn't care where she ran to, she just couldn't be home.

Her father gave her strict instructions for the next week.-She couldn't tell anyone about the divorce or about her leaving.
-She had to act normal and not make people question her.
-She must come straight home after school or work.
Valerie followed his orders until it was finally Saturday. It was time to leave. She had resigned from her job and packed her things. Her dad was putting their luggage in the car as Valerie hugged her mom.
She refused to let go to the point where her father had to pull her off of her mother. He dragged her to the car as she sobbed silently. He opened the passengers side door as someone called out. "Valerie!" Robin was running down the sidewalk in a hurry. Valerie had trusted Finney with the secret of her leaving and apparently he told Robin, but she wasn't upset. If anything she was glad she could say a proper goodbye. She ran right into his arms, causing him to stumble backwards.
He wrapped his arms around her tightly and played with her hair as she sobbed into his shoulder. "I don't want to leave." she said as her breath hitched. "I know.. I know." he whispered, tears falling down his cheeks.
They hugged for a few minutes before Robin gently pushed her off of him. She looked at his head and noticed he wasn't wearing his bandanna. She pointed to his forehead and chuckled. "Where.. where's your bandanna?"
He held out his hands, the blue bandanna placed in them. "So you wont forget me." This just made her start sobbing again. She took it from him and clutched it in her palm as she laid her head on his shoulder. "I could never forget you, cowboy."
Robin watched as she walked back to the car. She had tied the bandanna around her wrist like a bracelet. Valerie gave the boy one last smile and thumbs up before she got in the car. Her father closed the door and got in the drivers seat.
He started the car and they began to drive off. Valerie laid her head on the window and played with the bandanna. A tear fell down her cheek as she remembered all the antics her and Gwen had gotten up to over summer. All the times she had talked with Donna about Finney. All the times Finney would make fun of her shoes, which led to her kicking him.
She blinked a few times, allowing more tears to fall. She closed her eyes and smiled at the thought of Robin. Soon enough, she fell asleep.
