Why

My mom came to check if I was ready as I tied the laces of my converse. She was nervous for how my first day back would go. The night before she asked me if I was certain I wanted to go back. It's not that I wanted to, but that I needed to. You have to face your problems at some point, right?

The autumn air filled my lungs when I walked out the door and to the car. Something about the orange leaves and the smell of dying plants made me feel so happy. That sounds kind of morbid, but the Halloween season is upon us and I'm excited.

Once I make amends with Robin, I plan to tell the group about my costume idea. For the longest time, I've wanted to go trick-or-treating with my friends dressed as the Mystery Gang.

I remember talking Robin's ear off with the topic of Halloween and what we should go as, and it was nowhere near September. Yes, I said September because, let's be honest, Halloween season starts well before October.

Speaking of Robin, I decided I'd try and avoid bringing up an excuse of why I left and just show how sorry I am for 'forgetting' the bandanna. Maybe I can say that my dad took it away from me instead? I'll figure it out.

Walking through the hallway for the first time in a while was really weird. Kids kept staring at me and Julie glared at me. She thought she got rid of me for good, but it won't be that easy. I always come back.

I'm now sat in second period. Robin kept looking over at me every chance he could get and I don't think Finn noticed I was home yet. I'll make sure to catch up to him after class.

For now, I need to focus on whatever kind of math we're learning currently. I will admit that I haven't been focused at all today. For some reason, this one brunette boy is stuck in my head.

It's finally the end of the day and I'm about to make my way over to Robin's locker. I just need to grab a few books first.

As I shut my locker, I saw a familiar blonde walking over to me. Fuck my life.

"Hi Valerie!" she said in a preppy tone.

"Hi Julie." I hid a scoff in my words and plastered a smile on my face.

"I didn't know you were back! Why are you back?" she asked through gritted teeth. She's a terrible actress.

"I just felt like coming back, y'know?"

She hummed as she thought of what to say next. "Yeah, so crazy how you can just make decisions like that. Unless you can't and you just ran away. That would make sense since, you know, you're your dad's daughter." she laughed along with her friends and walked past me. God I hate that bitch.

I made my way to Robin's locker, just to see him and another kid surrounded by a bunch of students. I pushed through the crowd and saw Robin standing in a fighting stance as Moose stood across from him. "Oh look, there's your girlfriend now." Moose snickered and Robin turned his head to look at me. His face had a slight tint of pink to it, probably from embarrassment.

As Robin was looking at me, Moose lunged at him, knocking him to the ground. "Robin!" I shouted, which caught Finn's attention from down the hall. He came running towards us, stopping beside me. We watched in horror as Robin somehow kicked Moose's ass even though he was the one on the ground.

Kids all around us were cheering for Robin. Clearly everyone lost interest in Moose, and for good reason. He was a racist, homophobic asshole who wasn't mature in the slightest and didn't even know what common sense meant.

Robin pushed Moose's limp body off of him and stood up. He brushed himself off and walked past me and Finn, grabbing our hands as he walked by. We shared a concerned glance, but complied with Robin's actions. I nearly winced at the sight of his bloody knuckles. He really needs to stop getting into so many fights.

We walked for a while until we made it to a bus stop. Robin took a seat on the bench and Finn and I copied him. Finn did a double take as he looked at me.

"Holy shit! You're back!" he engulfed me in a hug as I laughed.

"Yeah... yeah, I'm back."

Robin rolled his eyes and changed the conversation. "You can catch up later. Right now, I need you to tell me why."

He looked me directly in the eyes with a stone cold expression.

"Why what?"

"Why did you leave Idaho so quickly? Why did you leave my bandanna behind? Why?"

Why? That was one word that made me feel sick to my stomach immediately.
