Chapter 30

"So we went to the amusement park then to a diner, I wasn't really hungry so I just ordered for a tub of ice-cream, halfway through I noticed something, it was a fucking ring, he got me a fucking promise ring. I was so shocked and excited..." Beulah was currently ranting about her holidays and how her boyfriend gave her a promise ring.

I woke up early today although I can't say the same for Britt as she insisted on looking after me, the wound in my abdomen opened up a bit yesterday when she saw it she panicked and hurriedly called my doctor, he explained that I should be more careful apparently I shouldn't have been discharged that early but with a little convincing from Robert he allowed my discharge, he also said I should see the school nurse which I thought was a very bad idea from my last experience so I begged Britt not to take me to the nurse, questions will rise up about how I got injured, parents will be contacted and that was a big no.

Although she agreed, she called her family doctor and he gave her instructions on what to do so I don't get an infection, agreeing to send a doctor in the vicinity to check up on me the following day, so she stayed up all night looking after me even though I told her I was fine.

I don't know how I went through the morning, you know the popular saying that you don't value something unless you lose it, that's exactly how I felt about my legs. It took me about fifteen minutes to get out of bed without waking Britt up then spent another ten minutes settling on my chair and wheeling myself to the bathroom, dressing up that usually took me about 20mins tops took me about 40mins at the end of it all I was exhausted. I woke Britt up, and her sleepy-self deemed it necessary to scold me first before she grudgingly went to the bathroom. I had moved from my chair to the bed to get some rest and stretch my legs, almost drifting off to wonderland when the door barged open revealing a beaming Beulah, I was already getting worried when she hadn't resumed and I never got her number so I couldn't call and here she was, three days after resumption date rambling on about her holiday.

I couldn't hear water running so I stood to check, "Beulah please pass me the chair over there"

She wheeled the chair to me but her face held confusion, "why do you need this?"

I shrugged as I helped myself to the chair, "I got into a small accident during the holiday can't walk for a while"

"Oh my, I'm so sorry. I was so invested in telling you about my holidays that I didn't ask how yours went"

"It is okay, it is no big deal. Imma just check on Britt"

"You guys seem to be getting along well"

I chuckled nervously, "she isn't bad, you just have to get to know her. She is nice and fun to be with"

She looked at me skeptically, "are we talking about the same person here?"

I laughed as I wheeled myself to the bathroom, I knocked and received a 'almost done'

"So has anything interesting happened in school recently?" Beulah asked eagerly

I shook my head negatively, even if it did happen how was I meant to know.

"Can't wait for high school to be over" I replied honestly

She laughed, "Same here"

Just then Brittney stepped out, she was already on her uniform and as usual my jaw slackened, I sighed contently as she gave me a subtle wink.

"You ready?" she asked in a monotone voice probably because Beulah was here

"Yeah" I said as I picked my backpack and placed it on my lap

I turned to Beulah, "Are you coming to school today?"

She shrugged, "Yeah, Imma just dress up first but how you going get to school, wheeling yourself must be tiring you can wait for me if you want"

Britt came over to me as she glared at Beulah who was quite oblivious to what was going on, "You don't have to worry, she is with me"

"But-"

"She is fine" Britt said dismissively as she wheeled me towards the door, I gave Beulah a small smile and mouthed 'I'm sorry', she nodded understandingly and bade me bye.

"Really Britt, did you have to be mean?" I huffed as we headed to class building

"She saw that we were leaving together, did she think I will walk while you wheel yourself along" she asked the irritation still clear in her voice

"If I haven't gotten to know you I won't put that past you" I said as I shrugged

She abruptly came to a halt as she came to face me, the glare was now directed to me as I chuckled nervously.

"What's that supposed to mean?" she said as she narrowed her eyes at me

I gulped nervously, "I mean you used to be a b*tc- ...I mean you used to be a bit mean to me and you are quite mean to everyone else"

Her eyes seemed to narrow the more I spoke so I just decided to keep my mouth shut.

"Did you just call me a bitch"

"What no...I didn't even say it fully" I grumbled

"Is that supposed to make me happy?"

"I'm sorry, what I meant is that even if you are really cold and icy to people you are a big teddy bear deep deep...deep inside"

"Wow you're really full of sweet words and compliments today, I'm letting it go because we are really late to class and it is cold out here" she huffed as she resumed wheeling me

"You know I didn't mean that way" I said as I fidgeted pulling on my hoodie and shawl

"You are probably right anyway but I do like being a bitch. I love watching people squirm when they talk to me" she chuckled as I breathed out in relief

"Hey there Brittney" I groaned inwardly and stiffened on hearing his annoying voice as Brittney stopped wheeling me and faced him.

My doctor had recommended a physiologist to hasten my recovery, so with the permission of the school authority he came three times a week. The routine involved a bunch of exercises and me trying to walk with the aid of crutches although I could only go a few steps. I was already dreading today's routine because I had fallen on my butt in the last two routines that was until he walked over to us. He ignored me and faced Brittney, giving her smile that most girls will probably fall for.

"Hi there" she said as she gave him a small smile

"Brittney are we cool?" he asked as he stared at her, his minions licking their chapped lips as they stood behind him

"Yeah, why?"

"Oh cool. I thought you were avoiding me because of you know..."

"It's nothing like that" she said cutting him off

"Ok, but let me meet the lucky guy sometime, yeah?"

"Yeah sure sometime" she said dismissively, I sensed that she was getting impatient

"Uhmm, Brittney we should get going" I said in a calm and nervous tone as all attention was now diverted to me, for my peripheral I could see him glaring at me.

"Yeah sure, the doctor must be waiting" she said as she hurriedly wheeled me out without waiting for another word from him
