It was a very hot summer day.
Hermione and her parents were sitting in their backyard, covered in sunscreen. Hermione was reading a book as she heard something weird inside the house.
She looked at her mum and dad, but they didn't seem to have noticed it.
Curious, Hermione stood up and walked inside. But when she stepped into the kitchen she gasped.
A big brown owl was sitting on the countertop. Something that looked like a envelope was tied to it's left leg.
Outside Hermione heard her mother call her name.
'Hermione, is everything okay over there?''Well... could you come and take a look at this?' She answered, not able to describe what she was looking at. Never before Hermione had seen an owl this close, but she was sure they didn't have envelopes tied to their legs normally.
When her mother came into the kitchen she gasped as well. Her father followed her and he looked shocked as he saw the big brown owl sitting there.
'What's going on? Who let this owl in?!' He almost screamed.
'I don't know dad, maybe... maybe it has flown through the window.' Hermione answered, not entirely sure how the owl would have managed to fly through it, but also not able to come up with another possibility.
Now that the shock was gone, she dared to step a little closer to the bird. It still didn't move as Hermione took another step and she was able to touch the owl now.
She was a little bit scared, but her curiosity took over and she untied the letter form the owl's leg. As soon as the bird was free it got up and flew right out of the window.
Now that she could see the envelope better, she noticed there was a very beautiful, detailed, red wax seal on it. She carefully opened the letter and read it.
Hermione gasped.
The letter came from a woman called 'Professor McGonagall' who was teacher at a school called 'Hogwarts'. It was a school for witches and wizards, to learn magic. Even though Hermione had never heard of it, she immediately believed it existed.
It all made sense, all the weird things she had been able to do were magic! It made her feel very excited, a bit scared, but excited.
Quickly she gave the letter to her parents. Their eyes grew bigger while reading it and when they look up again they looked rather confused.
'A school called 'Hogwarts'? What's this all about, Hermione?' They asked.
They hadn't figured out how Hermione could possibly be a witch at once, but when she told them this might be the reason she had been able to do things other kids couldn't, they understood.
After the shock of the owl and the confusion of the letter had watered a bit, Hermione's parents seemed almost just as excited as their daughter.
She already couldn't wait to actually go to the school and make some new friends.
