A few days earlier, Hermione had send a letter to her parents.
She had written that, this weekend, when they were going to Hogsmeade, she would be able to call them.
Hermione had never used the telephone in Hogsmeade before, since she had only discovered it's existence a few weeks ago, but she was looking forward to hearing her parents voices again.
That Saturday it was a sunny day, so it was nice to go to the village, instead of making homework inside.
When they entered Hogsmeade, Harry and Ron wanted to go to The Three Broomsticks, but Hermione didn't follow them.
'Do you want to go shopping first?' Ron asked, wondering why she wasn't going with them.
Hermione hadn't told them about the phone call she was planning to make, she didn't really have a reason for not telling them, but she felt a little silly, because no one they knew had every used the telephone in Hogsmeade.
'Ehmm. Well, there is a telephone here that you can use for free and I'm going to call my parents.' She answered, a little awkward.
'Oh, really? I haven't seen a telephone here before?' Harry wondered.
'No I also haven't, but I read about it in a book about Hogsmeade a few weeks ago and I think you can find it in that street over there.' And she pointed to a small street a bit further away from The Three Broomsticks.
'Ooh, I wanna come!' Ron said, all excited.
Hermione laughed, she hadn't though Ron would find a telephone interesting, but apparently he did, because he followed her.
'But how does this thing work, then?' He asked when they got to the phone.
A very confused expression appeared on Ron's face as Hermione explained that you enter a phone number and just talked into the phone.
Harry looked very amused as well when Ron asked, 'Wow. Muggles really are quite smart.'
Hermione called her parents and they talked for half an hour, while Harry and Ron went to The Three Broomsticks.
After she said goodbye, she put the phone down and also walked back to the cafe.
Hermione saw her friends sitting at a window and walked towards them.
'Hi Hermione, happy your back, the only thing Ron is talking about now is phones!' Harry told her.
Ron began talking before Hermione even opened her mouth, 'It just makes no sense! How is it possible that Muggles can make something like that, but aren't capable of doing magic?!'
Hermione laughed, 'I don't know, Ron, maybe ask your dad.'
'I'm sure he'd be just as confused as I am. Your very smart Hermione, can't you explain how a phone works.'
She felt her cheeks turn a bit hotter at that small compliment and she started explaining everything she knew, while still a bit surprised by Ron's genuine interest.
