I closed the door to my locker and began walking to second period. "Y/N!" Y/f/n sprinted over to me, swiftly maneuvering through the crowds of students around us. "How did last night go?" She whispered, nudging my shoulder.
I sighed. "He didn't even show up. I guess he got the memo."
"Aw, at least he made it easy for you." she winked before scolding me for not walking faster. We would be late if we didn't pick up the pace. Our class was on the other end of the building.
Thankfully, the school day went by quickly. My teachers have already begun handing out homework and assignments, but nothing too challenging. It took me not even three hours to finish it all. Just a bunch of useless busy work. I read some of my textbooks to get ahead and then went downstairs to make cookies for my mom and me.
"Hey, mom. What kind of cookies are you in the mood for?"
"Oatmeal, please. Thanks, sweetie." She pulled me into a hug.
"Where has Jake been? Do you want to ask him to join us for dinner again?" I stiffened, searching for a lie to fabricate. I should've known she would ask eventually.
"He told me his teachers gave out lots of homework. He'll definitely be too busy."
"Oh-"
"And can we get pizza tonight? So you don't have to make dinner?" I asked, grasping at another topic. She agreed and left me to myself. Conveniently, it was delivered just as the cookies finished baking. We ate while watching TV together.
"Mom, you know I love you."
She looked at me, nonplussed, "Is everything okay?"
"Yes!" I quickly recovered, "I just hadn't said it in a while." This, however, was not true. Something was wrong - something felt very wrong. It was as though tonight would be my last with her. I shook the thought from my head. No, that's not true, I told myself. There was no reason it would be, no reason it could be - it was just a harmless thought.
