All I could think about was Jake. I hope I hadn't offended him. Y/f/n kept throwing prying glances at me as though she knew something was wrong, but I assured her I was fine - just anxious to be back at school. This couldn't have been farther from the truth, though. I was actually enjoying my first day back. Almost all of my classes were with friends, and my teachers were chill. I could tell my senior year was going to be a breeze. My only demanding class was AP calc; the rest were manageable.

"Seriously, are you sure you're okay? Like absolutely positive? You seem distant - off in your own world. I've never seen you this anxious before, y/n. This isn't you." Y/f/n said, snapping me out of my dream-like state. We sat in the cafeteria, our chosen table next to a window. The sun beamed through it, warming my skin but blinding my right eye. I dismissed the urge to look at her, for if I did, I knew I wouldn't be able to keep my mouth shut. I continued to stare at my food, picking at it - yet refusing to bring a bite to my mouth. I was in no mood to eat. "Yeah. Anxious, like I told you before."

She blew air out of her cheeks, leaning back in her chair, "Look at me, y/n." I lifted my head. Continuing to lie to her would do no good, I decided.

"I'm sorry." I said quietly, "Allow me to explain." I described, as clearly and concisely as possible, the events of the past week. How I got my phone back, the note from Jake, my time spent with him, how my parents came to know of his existence, and his abrupt confession. By the time I finished, the bell rang, signaling lunch was over. Seniors could leave school now. I quickly looked away from y/f/n, not wanting to see her reaction.

"My house?" she asked, stuffing her lunch box into her book bag. The walk there was silent, not one of us daring to speak to the other. I think the loss for words was mutual.

"I'm glad we get early dismissal this year." I said, breaking the stillness between us.

"Mhm," she acknowledged, then turning to face me, "I can't believe you made a hot vampire boy fall for you. That's crazy, y/n!" I laughed uneasily. "Well, do you like him too?"

"I do, I really do, but-" I faltered. We turned the corner into her driveway.
