1930
"Ready for the Great Depression?" Gill asked me with sarcastic joy. He never was one to act sad.
I groaned, "Yippie..."
"Seriously glad I pulled my money from the bank in time."
"Perks of knowing the future." I sighed. "Still kinda depressing." I flashed a smile.
"Jeez, your jokes are worse than mine. But you know what caused the Great Depression? A lack of good comedians."
"I think that one was somehow worse, and that's coming from a person who can literally never keep a straight face," I really tried to retort with a monotone expression, but I wasn't exaggerating when I said I could never keep a straight face.
"Hey! Maybe that's why it's called gay! You know 'cause both meanings... not straight... yeah I'll just kinda... Wow look at that neat wall." I tried to hide the smile that spread across my face. We're a terrible pair, really. I smile at even the smallest things and he was constantly making me laugh. He can't hardly feel pain, but my face always hurts.
I chortled. "What's so funny?" He grinned at me in question.
"You're just cute is all." I pulled him to me in a soft kiss. He kissed me more deeply, but I pushed away from him with a smirk. "So what do ya wanna do today. America's kinda in a slump richt noo."
He took me back to him and placed my arms around his neck and his on my waist. We moved in a slow sway to the jazz on the record player. "Well I was actually thinking 'bout takin' you dancin'."
"As long as it's not the swing then that sounds aces."
"I adore you." He grinned and kissed my nose.
"Aw. I adore you too." I lightly pecked his nose back.
"I adore you more."
"Well I adore you most."
"I adore you mostest times infinity, plus one." I snorted a laugh and he chuckled then pulled me into a hug. "So get ready 'n rondeau in the living room in five?" I quirked an eyebrow. I don't think I could pick out an outfit in five minutes. "Okay, whenever you're done."
I gave him a quick kiss on the cheek then went to pick out a dress. The world just wasn't ready for sweatshirts and leggings yet. I walked into our closet and picked out a dress that I kept from the '20s with smooth silk cloth and a low back. Also a necklace of pearls to go with my bracelet that I never take off.
I looked in the mirror and applied my rosewood color lipstick and shape-shifted to fix my brown hair into neat curls.
I walked out of our shared bedroom to see him laying on the couch with his eyes closed. I grinned then decided to wake him to my lips against his. Gill hummed.
"Hey, Sleeping Beauty, you ready to go?" I softly spoke.
He pulled me down to him to sit in his lap. Gill took in every detail of my face as he caressed my cheek then kissed me some more. "I dunno. Kinda changin' my mind right now." He hummed as I kissed him back.
"Then we prolly outta go." I twirled little circles in his hair. I had convinced him to trim it, but it still wasn't real short. I told him it looked like an early '80s trend. I loved it.
Fish slightly tightened his grip. "Just a few more minutes? The jazz age ain't goin' nowhere. At least not for a long time," he mumbled into a kiss and slid me closer. Gill moved to my jaw and I leaned away from him, breaking it off.
"Uh-uh. You know we'll never leave if we start that." I rubbed my lipstick kisses from his mouth with my thumb.
"Well, I mean, that's not such a bad thing."
