"Avalon, at this rate you're going to be only one left alone!" said Ginny, as Avalon rejected a sixth year Ravenclaw boy who had just asked her to the ball. "Hermione's going with Krum, I'm going with Neville, and Melora's also taken now. You've got to say yes to someone."

"Yeah, well, for that the person needs to be of my liking, don't they?" said Avalon, feeling irritated.

"I said yes to Neville because otherwise I wouldn't have been able to attend the Yule Ball." said Ginny. "We're going as friends. You don't have to like someone to go to the ball with them."

Avalon kicked the stone into the lake, and watched it create ripples on its surface. Ginny was right -- at this rate she really was going to be left all alone during the Yule Ball.

"Who's Melora taking?" asked Ginny suddenly.

"Some Beauxbatons boy." Avalon answered.

"Is he handsome?"

Avalon nodded. "Very handsome. I would say, he's even handsome than Cedric."

"Then why can't you learn from her and find someone handsome too?" said Ginny, crossing her arms. She paused. "Er, would you have said yes to Fred if he had asked you?"

"Don't even repeat his name to me." Avalon snapped. "It was because of you that I felt like a fool when he asked Angelina."

"I really thought he liked you!" said Ginny defensively.

"Yeah, well, he doesn't, right?" Avalon suddenly sighed. "I live such a miserable life. The person I like doesn't like me. The person whom I don't like also doesn't like me, either. Ugh!" She kicked another stone in the lake.

"Stop being so dramatic." said Ginny, rolling her eyes.

"Dramatic is my middle name." said Avalon. She suddenly stopped as her eyes landed on a person who had just arrived and settled under the tree a few feet away from them.

The unmistakable whitish-blonde hair, the wand tucked behind the ear, and the radish earing dangling from her ears -- it was Luna Lovegood.

"I think I just found the perfect person to be my partner." said Avalon, a grin spreading on her lips.

Ginny frowned, and followed her gaze before her eyes widened. "You want to take Luna Lovegood to the ball? You don't even know her!"

"I know her better than you." said Avalon, and she started walking toward Luna. She was reading a magazine, and looked up when they approached her.

"Hey, Luna!" Avalon said brightly, sitting in front of her.

"Luna, this is my friend Avalon Beaumont." said Ginny, settling down on the grass under the shade.

"You're the transfer student." said Luna dreamily.

"It's already an old news, Luna." said Avalon, waving her hand. "It's already been a year and a half since I arrived at Hogwarts."

Luna simply stared at her with her pale eyes. Ginny looked awkwardly at Avalon.

"Well, I'm here to ask you something." said Avalon. "Will you go to the Yule ball with me?"

Luna turned her protuberant eyes upon her in surprise.

"Yule Ball? With you?"

"Yeah," Avalon nodded. "I thought you might like to come. I don't want to bring just anyone with me, so I thought why not ask you. You're fun to be around."

"You're talking like you know me." said Luna.

Avalon faltered. "I have seen you around a couple of time. And Ginny told me about you too."
