About 3 or 4 in the morning, the lodging house was quiet, perfect.
It was rare Leah ever got some quiet to herself. Usually she was either selling papers or trying to heard the boys inside like they were cattle. That's why she liked to wake up early, just to have so quiet before the ruckus of the day.
Hatten wasn't all that bad, to be honest, being the one of the only girls had it's advantages. Not having to share a bed with anyone being one of them. All the newsies treating her like a sister, sometimes annoyingly so. It can be frustrating having your own personal bodyguard every shift (per Jacks request). But it was home.
Leah had a soft smile across her lips as she scanned across the paper of her sketchbook. She had saved up for weeks on end just so she could get one, and so far it had been worth it. She had already filled two full pages full of drawings, such as birds, trees, really anything. Although she had talent, she could never quiet get the hang of drawing people, maybe she didn't look at people long enough to get a reference?
Ringgg! Leah's smile quickly faded as she heard the morning work bell. Moans and groans we're heard across the room as the all the boys were waking up. Yep, silence ended. Leah sighed softly as she closed her book, gently sliding it under her pillow.
"Oi! Moscsvit!" Race called as she turned her head to face him. "What is it now?" She asked the boy as she started tying her hair up into a ponytail. "Ise got a proposition for ya" he said with a cheeky grin, curls in his face.
She sighed, this couldn't be good. "Just say it Higgens". "So, ise gonna go ta Brooklyn tonight, and I needs ya to come with me. "Why?..." The girl questioned, furrowing her eyebrows at him. That's when the boy got nervous "So a couple of da Bois and me plays card and I kinda- maybe- sorta- made a bet that if I bring a girl next time they'd give me two dollars"
"Oh for the love of God Race, No" Leah said sternly, standing up as she picked up her newspaper bag. "Oh c'mon! Please? Ya don't even have ta talk to me!" Race said with a whine. "What's in it for me?" She crossed her arms.
"Iss get ya two meals at tibbys on me" "make it three" "done" and the two shook hands.
Before she knew it they were all out the door getting in line for their daily papers. Leah made sure to be first in line, the rest of the boys not having the guts to cut her off. Placing her money on the counter she quickly stacked her papers in her bag and headed off.
((Sorry this part is a little short, I promise it'll be better next chapter!))
