----Chapter Sixteen----
A/N - *cough cough* she's like a shot of espresso... the gif is for reference ♡
"You make me feel at home. You make me feel that the world is not strange...
What kinder gift can someone give another one?"
- Anne Sexton, A Self-Portrait in Letters.
Hushed whispers were the first thing Evangeline heard. One struck her as familiar, the raspy tone and honey-dipped voice soothing her confusion. Jasper.
Once the soft chatter subsided, Eva felt herself flare at the pounding in her head. She had yet to open her eyes, stuck in darkness with throbbing encasing her brain, leading to her twitching in her position.
Her mood change didn't go unnoticed by Jasper, who had entered the nurse's room (after Emmett had practically flown across the school to notify him of the mishap). He hurried over to where the poor girl was resting, scooping her head ever so gently up and into his lap, then massaging her scalp.
He couldn't help it. It was like second nature to nurture her. She was so vulnerable in that moment, the side of her pale face flushing a purple colour. Bruising, no doubt going to make his girl self-conscious. Her usually hidden body was exposed to the masses, her weak frame curling in on itself, as if it was trying to hide. He saw the flecks of goosebumps on her skin, the way her hair framed her ghostly face. He could only imagine how her hair would look when dipped in glorious sunshine, and how her skin would glow in health and prosperity. Although he had yet to see her at her best, healed and truly happy, he couldn't help but gaze in awe at the beautiful girl in his lap. No, she didn't have a small chest and pin-like limbs. But by heaven she was breath-taking. She was real. He loved the way her eyes would shine with raw emotions, the way her dimples peeped out when she smiled. How her softness in physicality reflected her gentleness, her kind soul. She was an iridescent jewel hidden in a mass of coal to him, and he could never take his eyes off her.
He was too busy lost in his thoughts of the brunette that he didn't realise their eyes met. Eve's hazel eyes fluttered open, coming to find amber already submersed in hers. If it weren't for the groaning in pain from the girl, it's possible that the two would've forgotten about the existence of time, staring forever at one another.
Wordlessly, Jasper placed his icy hands over her temples, instantly soothing the burning in the poor girl's head. This action released an involuntary hum from the girl, shifting her head further into his hands. It was then that she realised their position, becoming immensely self-conscious that her body was in plain sight for Jasper to perceive. Eve started to shuffle out of his gentle arms, trying to curl into herself. He, of course, noticed her embarrassment, unzipped his hoodie, and draped it over her smaller frame. The softness of the clothing, alongside the velvet kisses on her head quietened the brunette.
