"It would be a privilege to have my heart broken by you."

- John Green, The Fault in our Stars

The imprint of Jasper's lips had lingered on Eva's, tingling with a certain buzz. Her days, nights, all full of thoughts. Thought of him, thoughts of her, thoughts of him and her. His entire being seemed to consume her; he became all she could think about, and for that reason she distanced herself.

Jasper had noticed the following days since their kiss a certain detachment from the girl. The brunette had carved her way into his heart, the same thing that he claimed would never be of any tenancy again, and she seemed to be leaving him. He had the space in his soul marked out for her, and now she was slipping away, quietly, slowly.

He didn't know what he did. Perhaps she didn't want him anymore, it was a mistake to kiss him. Perhaps she realised when she shut the passenger door that night he dropped her home – rushing inside – maybe then she understood what a monster he was. He was afraid to ask what was wrong, what he had done.

It's possible that he was overthinking. Making mountains over molehills. Yet, he had to remind himself, this was a mountain. A tremendous, tumultuous terrain that even Eve said she was hesitant to climb. It was too rocky, too many things that Eve had to overcome, he had to overcome, in order for it to have been a simple kiss.

So much more than they could've ever bartered had been thrown into the mix, and this had shaken the poor girl to her core.

It could be her breaking point. We'd just have to wait and see.

Evangeline Freemond had been bombarded by her aunt as soon as she scurried in that night. Faye, ever the sweetheart and hopeless romantic, begged for all of the details of her niece's trip. The way Eva's face glowed with a rosy blush, and her erratic patting of her cheeks gave it away.

Eva had adored the way her aunt had brewed tea, listened with complete concentration. Her focus was her, and their girlish chatter melted the icy corners of the teens heart. If youth could be described with a moment, it would have been this. The light-hearted banter, the first talks of naïve and innocent love. The knowing looks and shoulder bumps. Youth may have been stripped from Evangeline, yet this nostalgic feeling of something new, new discoveries and unveiled secrets restored it. A little.

When she left the lounge that evening, deserted in her room, she realised the depth of her situation. Feelings. The inevitable human errs when loving someone. To her, vulnerability was like a double-edged sword, get hurt opening up, get hurt not doing so. He plagued her mind, her body, her soul. How long until that plague turned into sickness and decay?
