"I have spent all of my life resisting the desire to end it"
- Franz Kafka
By the time that Evangeline had reached the police station in Seattle, her tears had drained her. She had felt as if her soul had been sucked from her, leaving her bereft, grieving the person she could have become. The only giveaway that she had left Faye's home fighting was the heavy bruises on her wrists, collarbone, and cheek. Police claimed she was 'defiant' and 'threatening' – how a five-foot two girl could pose a threat to five bulky officers was absurd, but hey ho.
As soon as the car grinded to a stop, the suited men hauled her out, like she was cargo. Blinding lights and shouting had paralysed the body of Evangeline Freemond, hollers and questions being hurled towards her.
It appeared that someone hired reporters to harass the brunette, interested in the case that 'blew up' in Italy. Men jostled her around, throwing insults, demanding answers. 'Eva, why did you leave?' 'Were you trafficked?' 'You're a whore for making people care about such a low life!' so on so forth. Somehow, it didn't affect the girl, they were only words, ones she had heard before. The concept that people had inflated the situation to this level confused her more.
The next few hours blurred, time becoming pointless and menial. Evangeline was dragged back and forth by men to listen to her rights – or what they wanted to claim was rights, we all know they wouldn't truly let her use them – hurried to the car again. It appeared that the suited men that involved themselves with the officers were hired by her mother and friends abroad and given the go for escorting her home. How it had been cleared for them to do so without police intervention was beyond anyone, but all Evangeline knew was that they were in charge of her for the near future.
When she stepped out of the car for a second time that night, Eva found herself on a runway, near a private plane. Her momentary pause made one of the men turn around.
"Don't think about running, girlie. There's nobody around here to hear you scream," he chuckled, hands in pockets as he stood still.
Eva heard the word 'running', and immediately the part of her brain itching for her to flee decided to make itself known. If she ran, she would get caught, but it meant she tried. She went down fighting. That would be enough for her conscious for a little while. So, she turned her heels away from the man in front of her, doe eyes scanning around her.
"Look, look, she really thinks she has a chance!" the other man guffawed behind her suddenly. Eva took this abrupt interruption and jumped to the side in fright.
Eva decided it was now or never, so tried to take off running across the asphalt to a nearby hanger. That was, she tried. She didn't realise that she was in company of a vampire. Her ribs were nearly instantly grasped from behind, frame lifted into the air like a feather.
