Stefan was first to react. He sped across the room just in time to stop the bottle from hitting Kai square in the face. "Emily!" he shouted, giving Emily a warning glare. Though she could see slight amusement sneaking through his facade.
"Oops, it slipped." Emily shrugged and leant against wall, crossing her arms.
"Hey, I was complimenting you!" Kai stated, raising his hands defensively.
Emily pouted. "Yeah, well, I don't like you."
Stifled laughter caught Emily's attention. She turned to see Alaric trying to hide a smile. When he saw her looking, he gave a knowing wink. From that, Emily could tell Alaric didn't like Kai. And after everything Kai put Jo through, Emily couldn't really blame him.
"Okay, now that Emily is somewhat calm," Damon continued, gazing at Emily, a warning clearly readable on his face. "We need to make sure that she or anyone else for that matter, doesn't kill Kai."
Emily snorted, "Easier said than done, Damon."
"I know. But don't think of it as keeping Kai safe, instead think of it as keeping Jo safe. Would that be easier?" Damon challenged, folding his arms across his chest and looking to Emily fiercely.
There was silence as everyone waited for Emily to reply. Eventually she sighed and threw her hands up in surrender. "Fine. Fine. Whatever."
"You guys do realise that I'm in the room, right?" Kai piped in, sitting up straight and flicking his gaze from Damon to Emily.
"We know. We just choose to ignore it," Emily said, smirking at Kai.
Unfortunately, Kai was not deterred. Emily was hoping for some sort of fear, or disgust, or even hatred but there was nothing. In fact, Kai did the complete opposite of what she expected: he winked and smiled at her. Annoyingly, Emily found the smile quite irresistible. She didn't want to but she couldn't help it. He was handsome. Emily grunted with disgust, mostly at herself for thinking such grotesque thoughts.
"Speaking of Kai, Emily we need you to keep an eye on him," Damon said.
"What?!" Kai questioned, shooting up from the sofa. "That's not fair. I don't need a babysitter."
"For once," Emily spoke, peeling herself from the wall, "I agree with Kai. I am not going to look after him!"
"Well, frankly, neither of you have a choice. Jeremy's left for art school. Matt's disappeared and has work anyway." Damon gestured to the two girls on the sofas. "Caroline and Elena are at college." He took a deep breath. "Liv doesn't want anything to do with him except kill him and obviously, we're trying to avoid that." Damon gazed sadly at Jo and Ric. "And I will not give Jo and Ric that responsibility-"
"And what about you Salvatore brothers, huh?" Emily interrupted, rage building up inside her. "You just gonna dump that crap on me whilst you go play bachelor at the clubs?"
"Em-" Stefan began, taking a step toward the annoyed demon.
Damon put a hand up, cutting Stefan off. He sighed and walked over to Emily. When he reached her, he put his hands on her arms and looked into her green eyes. "We can't keep him safe like you can, Em. You're the only one capable of doing this. Please."
Emily's mouth dropped open in shock. She stood there, unbelieving of what Damon was asking her. He couldn't be serious! Emily, a ferocious demon, babysitting a grown man like some mortal human would do with a child.
"Damon, I just tried to kill him. Twice! What makes you think I'd be good at it?" she asked.
"Exactly! Since Kai has arrived, I've only ever seen him fearful when you almost choked him to death. I have a feeling you'll be fine keeping him in check." Damon smiled cheekily.
Emily really hated that smile. Not because she it was ugly or anything but because it always made her weak at the knees. Whenever he flashed that smile, she found herself unable to resist him.
"Alright, fine. Whatever."
Damon hugged Emily tightly but she did not return it. She wasn't a big hugger.
"Thank you!" Damon said. He pulled away from her and gave her hand a grateful squeeze. Then he let go and turned to Kai. "And what about you? What do you have to say?"
Emily had genuinely forgotten Kai was still in the room. Probably because he was being unusually quiet. Even when Damon asked him that question, he remained silent for a long while. Everyone waited anxiously for his response.
When Kai did eventually speak, his voice was steady and confident, "Fine. But you're staying at mine. I'm not living in this house."
A soft gasp escaped from Emily. "You're okay with me looking after you? Why?"
"Well, to be honest," Kai made his way over to Emily and took one of her hands in his. They were unexpectedly soft and held hers with a surprising tenderness. "out of all the people here, you're the most tolerable."
It wasn't the best compliment she'd ever received but she was shocked at how genuine and sweet it sounded. Especially coming from him. With Kai's reputation and her discussion with Luke before he passed on to the next part of his life, Emily was utterly stunned by how... human he was acting right now. She was also taken aback by the electricity she felt running along her arms from his touch. Emily stared down at their intertwined hands and then back up to his eerily serene eyes. What was this feeling she was experiencing?
Before long, Emily realised that all eyes were on her. Again. She hastily removed her hand from Kai's. "Well? What are we waiting for? Let's go." Emily's voice was astonishingly neutral considering her thoughts were racing.
Kai scoffed but said nothing. He shrugged and turned his back on Emily, heading towards the front door. When he reached the wooden barrier, he spun on his heels and waited with a raised brow.
Emily peered once around the room. The gaping faces that stared back made her uncomfortable. It's not like she's ever been looked at like she was freak or some sort of malevolent being but this was different. These were her friends that were currently looking at her with confused expressions. She didn't like the way it made her feel.
Her cheeks darkened so she quickly dropped her gaze and followed Kai. As soon as the two of them left the awkward boarding house, Kai skipped down the stairs. He stopped at Emily's car and turned to face her.
"You know, I have a feeling this is gonna be a lot of fun!"
Fun is not the word I would've used. Emily thought to herself. She watched as Kai leant on her car, smirking at her. Oh Hell... What have I agreed to?
