Emily's eyes were glued to the road as she sped down the highway. Suddenly, a low buzz pulled her out of her trance. As she removed her hand from the steering wheel to pick up her phone, her fingers brushed another's. That was when she remembered that she was not alone in the car.
Keeping one eye on the road, Emily cast a quick glance to her right to see Kai lazily leaning back in his chair and smirking at her. Hell, she was really starting to get annoyed with that smirk. It was so arrogant and egotistical.
"What do you think you're doing?" she asked.
"Well, you're not meant to text and drive, you know? It could kill you," he said, picking up the phone and checking the message.
Emily wanted to slap it out of his hand and laugh in his face. Sure, her body could get hurt and she could 'die' but not in the same way humans could. Though, Kai didn't know what she was and she was hoping to keep it a secret. Why? Because for some reason, Emily didn't want him treating her as if she were a monster...
"It's Caroline," Kai stated.
Emily's grip tightened on the steering wheel. "What did she say?"
"She said her mother's at the station saying her goodbyes."
Silence filled the car like fog rolling in on an cold autumn morning. Emily could feel water threatening to spill from her eyes but she held it back. She didn't care if Kai saw her crying. She was more afraid that crying would make her too human. She'd already spent longer on the surface than necessary and every demon knows that the more time you spend with the humans, the more you become one. Even hanging out with fellow supernaturals was turning her soft.
"She's dying, isn't she?" Kai's level voice echoed around the small space.
Emily could feel his eyes on her but she kept her gaze straight and nodded in response. Evetnually, she broke the awkward silence. "It's gonna ruin her..."
"Who?" Kai asked.
"Caroline."
"Why? Everyone dies. It's not a big deal."
At this statement, Emily slammed on the breaks and twisted her head to him.
Kai was holding his nose as he raised his head slowly. He sluggishly turned his head to face Emily. "Ow."
"How can you be so heartless?" she asked.
Kai shrugged non-chalantly. "I killed my family, Emily. I don't have a heart. So I really couldn't care less if someone else dies."
Sure Kai was speaking metaphorically about not having a heart because Emily could feel his beating inside his chest. But a part of her wanted to reach inside and yank it out to make his statement literally true. However, when she gazed at him, she saw that though his remark was emotionless his face was not. There was something there, something that looked like... empathy?
"That's not the point, Kai. Sure, Death is a part of life but it's the affect it has on others that we should be considerate of. Plus, Caroline is my friend. I'm sad on her behalf," Emily said quietly. Though she turned back to face the road, she didn't start the engine again. Luckily no-one was around as they were in a more peaceful area of Mystic Falls.
"You sound like you know from experience..."
Emily returned her gaze to Kai and smiled sadly. "I've seen thousands of deaths on Earth and will continue to see death until I die... To say I'm experienced in the matter would be a total understatement." She laughed seeing Kai's jaw widen.
"H-how is that possible?" he asked, stumbling over his words.
"Oops, did I forget to tell you?" Emily put a hand to her O-shaped mouth as she feigned being shocked. "Ah, well. Guess you'll never know."
As Kai was about reply, Emily cut off his response by turning the engine back on and the music along with it. She then continued to drive down the road and towards the motel Kai said he was staying at.
After a few more minutes, they arrived at the place and got out of the car together. Kai then led Emily into the room he had booked. Whilst she searched the room for anything that might help her understand him more, Kai began playing with his magic.
Emily sat upon the edge of his bed and watched as he extinguished and relighted a candle repeatedly. For a while, she just observed his movements. They were so elegant and calculated that everything he did seemed to radiate confidence. She couldn't deny that it was rather attractive.
"It feels so good to have this back," Kai said. He chuckled when he made the flame grow bigger and brighter. "I forgot how dull life is without magic. How do you humans cope?"
Irritation built up inside Emily. She wanted to tell him the truth, just to see his reaction but she couldn't. She wasn't supposed to tell anyone. It was supposed to be covert mission. Though she broke that unspoken rule a long time ago. Now, she didn't tell anyone because for once she enjoyed being... well... Emily.
Eventually Emily broke the silence. "Can you do anything else?" she spat.
Kai rolled his eyes. "Course I can. But I'm not some circus mage that does tricks for petty pennies." He stopped for a second and then turned to Emily. "Actually, here's a deal. Why don't you tell me who, or rather, what you are and I'll show you something more... dangerous." He smiled and snuffed out the candle again.
"Ha, nice try, Kai Parker. But I'm not going to tell you that easily," she replied, narrowing her eyes at him.
"Oh, but I think you will. One way or another, you'll tell me. I can see it in your eyes. You want to tell me." Kai took a step towards her. That famous smirk made another appearance.
Now it was Emily's turn to roll her eyes. "Oh yes, and then we're going to order food and gossip about who's dating who and reveal all our darkest secrets as we become the best of friends." She scoffed and stood from the bed. Emily wasn't short, but she was smaller than Kai. So, she puffed out her chest, straightened her back and tried to look as intimidating as possible. "I'm not telling you anything, and you can't make me."
Kai chuckled and closed the distance further. "Oh, don't tempt me. Because, believe me, I have ways of getting exactly what I want." Kai smiled devilishly and somehow, in that short moment, he remained her of her creator. Her father. It was a wicked smile.
Emily could already feel herself shrinking underneath that gaze. She didn't like that Kai had that power over her. She tried to compose herself and laughed, trying to cover up her fear. "And what are you going to do? Kill me? Torture me?"
His face didn't change at all. It was completely unreadable. And Emily was too busy trying to figure out his intentions to notice that Kai was now within a foots distance from her.
"I have a feeling you like pain, so no. That won't do. But there are other ways, you know? More... exciting ways," he said.
The tension between the two skyrocketed. Their faces were only inches from each other and both of them could feel the warm breath of the other. Emily hoped Kai's magic wouldn't let him hear her heart because right now, it was beating like a drumroll. However, too engrossed in her own thoughts, Emily failed to notice Kai's own heart furiously pounding in his chest.
Emily was the first to make a move as she collected herself and leant in to give Kai a quick and gentle peck on the nose. "Maybe one day, hun." She then spun on her heels, flicking her long black hair as she did so, and disappeared into the bathroom.
When she came back out, a few minutes later, Kai was still stood there like a statue. Completely lifeless bar the redness in his cheeks. "Malachai Parker, are you blushing?" Emily teased.
It was at that moment, that Emily silently thanked Damon for making her do this. Partly because she enjoyed torturing people, being a spawn of Satan and all, but also because Kai was growing on her. And not in an unwanted fungus sort of way. Even if Emily didn't realise it yet, feelings were starting to emerge. Feelings that she may not want to admit even exist.
Nevertheless, Emily was liking this 'protection' job more and more. And though she told herself not to fall for the bad guy, she couldn't help noticing how dangerously attractive Kai is...
