Kai quickly turned his back on Emily. She couldn't see what was happening but judging by the heaving of his shoulders, she assumed he was taking a deep breath and recomposing himself after her shocking statement.
After a few seconds, Kai spun back around with a mischievous grin on his face. He strode over to the wine cooler on the side and removed the chilled bottle before picking up two glasses and striding over to Emily.
"Erm... Kai? What are you doing?" Emily asked, raising a single bushy brow.
He laughed. "Well, Emily, considering we're alone together, I thought we might want to enjoy this time and have a drink," he said, offering Emily one of the glasses.
Emily hesitantly took the glass from his outstretched hand but kept her own hand elongated so Kai could pour the deep red liquid into it. "But why?"
"What do you mean, 'why'?" Kai frowned and lifted the bottle. The blood like drink flowed into the shimmering glass like a small waterfall. "Am I not allowed to offer a beautiful lady a drink?" He smirked.
Scoffing, Emily slowly brought the glass to her lips and suspiciously sniffed at the contents. "Not someone like you, no," she retorted.
Kai chuckled and poured his own. Once he was finished, he lifted the glass and downed the drink in one. "Ye of little faith. See? Not poison." He stopped and sighed. He proceeded to open his mouth and then immediately close it as if he were thoroughly thinking through what to say next.
Eventually, he spoke. "I'm trying to make amends. I know looking after me may not be what you wanted but I'm glad you accepted. From the moment I saw you, I realised there was no-one else I'd rather spend time with." He smiled at Emily.
She was shocked. This was not a smile of fake origin nor was it full of arrogance. This smile held genuine affection which was an emotion Kai had never revealed before.
Unfortunately, that wasn't the shock that made her jaw drop open.
Over Kai's shoulder stood a woman with short blonde hair wearing a police officer's uniform. A woman that was not supposed to be there...
"Liz?" she asked, concern lining her voice. "You... You can't be here. I mean if you are that means... that means you're..." Emily choked on the last word. She wasn't sure why. She'd dealt with death before but yet somehow this was different. This was personal.
Kai had stood, watching the one-sided conversation unfurl, completely silent. Now, when Emily choked, he instinctively took a step toward her. "Emily? Liz isn't here... Who are you talking to?"
Emily ignored him. Not intentionally though, but just because she was far more preoccupied with the intruder in their room.
"It's true, Emily. I'm dead," Liz continued. "I'm sorry I couldn't hold on any longer. I-"
"No! You can't be. It's too early! Caroline... She..." Emily interrupted but found herself once more speechless.
"I know, Emily, I know. But I'm ready." Liz took a deep breath. "I will always be there to watch over Caroline even if it isn't in spirit. Please. I'm ready to move on."
Emily shook her head. "But I'm not." She abruptly faced Kai who was still stood like a statue, a look of bewilderment plastered on his face. "We need to get to the hospital." Emily downed her drink and dropped the empty glass onto the bed before heading toward the door. When she reached the wooden barrier, she turned back to kai. "Now, Kai!"
Kai snapped out of his daze and meekly followed Emily out of the motel room and into the car. Together, the two of them drove in silence toward the hospital. Kai wanted to make remarks about the speed and recklessness of Emily's driving but he was terrified of the vacant expression on her face.
