"Kai?" Emily said, her reddened eyes widening in shock. "H-how did you-"
"Find out?" he replied with a smirk. "Oh, you know, the usual: threatening, blackmailing, eavesdropping." He shrugged nonchalantly but from the sly smile on his face, Emily could tell he was very proud of himself.
"So, why did you come back? Was it just so you could gloat?" Emily asked, anger boiling up inside of her. She didn't move though and was very aware of their proximity. Her eyes darted between his steely gaze and the hand on her knee.
Kai realised where her gaze was moving to and hastily removed the hand. He then dropped his head. "No... I don't know why I came back. Curiosity, maybe?"
"Curiosity for what? You already know who-what I am... What else do you possibly need to know?" Emily was annoyed. Partly at Kai and his smugness, but also partly at herself. She thought she was careful but with everything going on it was hard to truly hide. Especially from a cunning psychopath such as Kai. She should've known he'd figure it out sooner or later.
Shrugging again, Kai slowly got to his feet. "Nothing for now." He looked down at Emily and crouched, holding out a steady hand for her. "Do you need help, demon?"
Emily batted away his hand rather fiercely and stood up, brushing herself down. "No, I do not need your help. I just... I need to get out of here." She stormed past him without waiting for a reply and headed towards the exit.
As soon as Emily stepped foot outside, it was like a weight had been lifted from her shoulders. She breathed in heavily, enjoying the cool air refreshing her lungs. She felt as if she'd been drowning. She hadn't been near so much death recently and the souls departing were surrounding her like thick smoke.
Since she was in a world of her own, she didn't notice Kai creep up on her until he was by her side. "So, where are we going now? Mine again?" he asked, striding over to Emily's car, and leaning back against it with his hands in his pockets.
Emily jolted slightly but took a deep breath and joined him. Before she opened the door, she lifted her eyes to his and narrowed them. "Why? So you can try and woo me by offering me a drink again? I think I'll pass." she replied with venom in her voice.
"You think I was trying to woo you?" Kai let out a bellowing fake laugh. "I was trying to get you drunk so you'd tell me who you are. But, obviously, that's not needed now."
Emily gritted her teeth. "Wow, you're so charming, Kai." She rolled her eyes at him and opened the car door.
He winked at her and shrugged. "Hey, I only do it for you." As he went to laugh, he began choking and doubled over.
"Oh my! Kai, are you okay?" Leaving the door open, Emily quickly put her hand on Kai's back and started rubbing small circles.
The witch went to reply but the words got caught in his throat and he bent over once more. This time, instead of just choking, he regurgitated and spat up blood.
Emily looked up but no-one was around. She'd have to leave Kai on his own to get help. Just as she was about to do that, Kai grabbed her wrist and she turned to see his eyes pleading. She'd never seen him so vulnerable.
"Don't, Emily... Not them... Take me... to my sister..." His words were broken and quiet.
"But, Kai, there are doctors here just like her and-"
Kai cut her off with one simple word, "Please."
Without any more hesitation, Emily put Kai's arm around her shoulders and lead him round to the other side of her car. She carefully sat him down inside and hastily ran back to the driver's side. Once in the car, she turned on the engine and sped down the road towards Jo and Alaric's place.
