Chapter 1

Lake

They called her boring, and she believed it too. From the sandy color of her hair to the small peds of her toes. She was a normal everyday human female. The only thing that stood out on her was hidden by a pair of old eyeglasses that looked like they had been picked out at the second hand store. Her pants were ripped at the knees, her shoes were old, and held together by duct tape and glue. Her shirt and jacket were thick and soft.

She kept looking over her shoulder to see if she was being followed. So far she hasn't. Yet here she was looking anyway.

She slowly looked back down at the small note telling her where to go, but not what subway train to take. She was horrible with directions and she had a new job to get to.

Her eyes fell onto the large map, its many words, colors...she was lost. She ran her fingers over her cheek pushing away any tears that ran down her face. She needed to get to the deli or she would lose the brand new job she obtained and one step closer to getting away from the foster parents she was stuck with.

Foster Parents?

Yeah, she was an orphan. Her parents died after their car landed in a lake. She was pulled from the car by someone, but they couldn't save her parents. When she woke up in the hospital her heroes had left. She never learned who saved her life.

"We'll need to embark down the red line if we do not wish to reschedule our plans."

"Yes, but the silver line is so much more quick." The other said.

The ordinary girl turned to look and spotted two of the more extraordinary men. One had on a normal white polo under a black sweatshirt with a yellow tie, coupled with a pair of black pants. His silver hair was perfectly quaffed back. The one who looked a lot like him wore a soft white jacket, a black turtleneck, and a pair of blue jeans. His hair was mostly on his forehead. The rest was held back by a pair of sunglasses.

Perfect...these two seemed to know just where they were going!

"Excuse me!" Her voice was so tiny. "Could you help me..." She held up the map in her hands.

"We're off duty today." The one wearing mostly black told her.

What was that supposed to mean? It's just a map...

"Yes please. We can not derail from our schedule. We will be late." The one wearing mostly white said. His fingers motioned toward the track.

Her plan was ruined.

She sat down in the nearest seat and dropped the map. She slowly let her eyes roam over the crowded room. There was a kid that ran by with a pokemon in his arms. The kid was so short the Glameows tail wound around his leg ending in a soft white bob.

Something she hadn't ever had a chance to do was be a trainer. She didn't have the know-how to do something like that. At least that's what she was told. She didn't even know what most of them were called. Just the ones she saw on tv the most. Well...when she was allowed to watch tv.

Ingo looked around at the girl once again, she couldn't be more then eleven years old, twelve at the most. She clutched the bag she had come with to her chest like she had something hidden in it and she was hiding. It caused him some concern and he had pulled back. Emmet hated to be late.

"Ingo we'll miss our train." He told his brother as he turned to see the little girl as she looked at the large map in front of her again. Why didn't she just go to the ticket booth and ask? Perhaps she didn't know she could do that?

'All aboard the silver line!' the speaker overhead called out.

Ingo let his brother pull him toward the train. It wasn't unusual, his brother was always in a rush. Hated to be late, actually Ingo was the same. Emmet however stopped pulling when he saw the horrified look on the young girl's face as she seemed to recoil from someone's hands.

It didn't take long for the subway bosses to read the look on the young girls face. She didn't like this new person...or his companions.

They walked forward together.

"Come on Lake, come home. Mom's waiting for us." Lake knew what that meant, that meant her mother was going to beat her senseless like she normally did if she were late.

"I'm sorry, I got lost." Her words were so quiet it could barely be heard over the massive crowd of people within the subway.

"What!?" The much larger male asked. Lake's voice just got smaller as he asked.

"M...sorry." Lake tried to push the man's hand away from her, but he grabbed her forearm and was making for one of the subway trains. Rather than getting on the train he held her out in front of the tracks.

"You're an excuse...I have no need for useless children." He let go of the young girl. She cringed expecting to feel the metal tracks. Yet she felt a pair of arms pull her close.

Unexpectedly it felt soft to the touch and almost warm. She opened her eyes to see the guy with the unkempt hair. The other one's smoothed back hair seemed to be coming ungelled with his rush to save her.

"Who the hell are you!?"

"We are the subway bosses. Ingo."

"I am Emmet." The name wasn't given to the man though, it was given to the young girl. She looked so scared, almost being killed by the man in front of them...now what should they do?
