Complete Mess
Chapter 7
Alone
Walking along the brightly colored platform toward the train. The Bodies within the cab were many at this time of morning. She was sure someone's briefcase was in her back, and a backpack was against her face. So she did what she could, she turned and practically buried her face in Emmets side. The subway boss looked down at her. Her fingers wrapped around his pant leg. The look on his face went from panic 'OMG she's touching me' to a 'dawwww...' in a few seconds.
Ingo looked down at the young girl as she clung to Emmet. He himself could see the discomfort of the briefcase as it was now on her side. Ingo reached over and pushed the briefcase away from her side and stood between her and the accusing object.
The man noticed what had happened and tipped his hat with a light apology. He didn't know it had happened. Accidents did happen a lot sadly.
Lake found that these two were incredibly warm, and probably would have fallen asleep standing up if they hadn't lightly steered her out the door.
"We have reached our destination." Ingo told her. Above them was a sign that said 'choo choo daycare' there was even a cartoon character above the door of a familiar blue train.
"Good afternoon Subway Bosses!" A woman with dark brown hair called out to them.
"Good afternoon Mi. I don't suppose you have room for another passenger today?" Ingo asked. Emmet leaned down to hand Lake a small bag with tiny trains along its clear pink surface. Lake looked inside, her eyes grew wide and she looked up at Emmet.
"For me?" She asked. Emmet nodded, apparently getting lunch to take to the daycare wasn't practiced at her earlier house either.
"Depends? How old is she?" Ingo was about to answer, but Lake answered for him.
"I'm 8 years old." Okay Ingo was incredibly wrong. He tipped his hat at the young child. "I'm Lake." She introduced herself.
"Dawww, hello there Lake. I'm Ms. Mi. Pronounced Me." She giggled at her own joke. Obviously Lake didn't take too well to jokes.
Emmet patted the girl's shoulder and motioned to the daycare. Obviously leaving his brother to sign any papers. He himself had always wanted to see inside the daycare. As soon as he got into the room the children looked up and gasped.
'Whoa! A real subway boss!' 'Are you his daughter?' 'What's your name!'
Obviously this was a bit overwhelming to Lake who backed up and buried her face into Emmets hip again. Emmet realized she had been using his Jacket to hide in the train if there were too many people around.
"There we are. You're all signed up, Lake." Ingo walked in to a chorus of
'Wow! The other one!' Ingo just chuckled as he watched the kids swarm them for a moment.
"Ah yes. We are late for our proper destination, Emmet. Come let us depart. Lake, you be good and we'll come pick you up just before closing time. We shall go out to eat after."
Being alone was what she was good at. Being alone was something familiar. Looking out a window for hours watching the hustle and bustle of the people going by was something Lake had gotten so used to that she felt into the act so well without noticing.
After the kids realized she was afraid of them and wasn't going to be answering any of their questions because in all honesty she was just staying with these two long enough for the police to figure out just what other family they were going to pawn her off on this time.
She felt her heart perk up as she saw Emmet exit the building with a toddler in his hands. He passed the child off to her mother. Obviously the child had been split up from their parents. Emmet turned to walk back into the building. He paused, spotting her, he took off his hat and bowed to her before walking back into the building.
"It won't last, you know. Those two can't possibly want someone like you." Lake looked up at the boy. His clothing looked like they had been permanently pressed, and his hair looked perfectly brushed to one side and glued there.
"It doesn't matter." Lake said as she turned back to look out the window. The wind began to whip leaves around the courtyard.
"Of course it matters, or you wouldn't be over here smiling like a porcelain doll as he's looking at you. Don't get comfortable. They keep to each other...you'll be thrown away like everyone else that gets close to them." He scoffed as he looked at the glare that Lake gave them.
"And for some reason you think anything thats falling out of your mouth means something to me?" Lake looked at the boy as he chuckled.
"I'm not blind."
"Alright, get out your lunches!" The caretaker called and went around to the infants and started to feed them one by one. There were only five.
Lake picked up her lunch and smiled as she opened it. Within was an assortment of meats, rice (formed into that of a train), steamed veggies, and...she smiled at the cookies. She smiled as she popped one into her mouth and giggled.
She wasn't used to eating so much food, so she saved the rest. Her smile faded as insecurities began to play up on her. They weren't going to come back for her, they didn't need to. She didn't belong to them. They said they would come back for her. Why did it matter? She didn't belong anywhere.
She didn't realize how long she had been staring at the lunch box. She felt a light tap on her shoulder. She jumped and looked up. Right into the silver eyes of Ingo.
He leaned and sat down on the chair beside her. The concern on his face was real. He let his gloved finger run along her cheek. Had she been crying?
Oh no...she couldn't stop. She kept trying to turn it off, she was always good with that sort of thing. Don't show emotion, it was useless. No one would care anyways...but then why was he giving her that look?
"Shhhhh...it's okay. We're here..." Ingo picked her up and held her close. Ingo made a hissing noise like his back was hurting. He took a deep breath and walked her out into the lobby.
"But you won't be forever. No one will be." She felt Ingo rub her back. She jumped when she felt him sit down. Where were they? Was their shift over? Where was Emmet?
"What started thoughts like this?" He asked her. She sat back to look him in the eyes.
"A kid with blond hair..." Oh he knew that kid.
"I see..." Ingo looked around as his brother walked around the corner and waved them over.
"Come along with them. No more thoughts like this. Right now it's dinner time and it would seem my brother had found the track to our table."
