Chapter 26

Sickness

Her head felt like she had cotton in it, and then after a little while she felt like she had eaten the cotton. Breathing was hard as well. There was one thing that never changed throughout it all, she knew someone kept her in their arms.

She opened her eyes and looked at the back windshield. Someone was back there, but she wasn't sure who they were. Everything was blurry, and she could hardly see the person.

She heard someone say something, and the person that held her pulled her back. She at least could make out the silvery hair, but which one's silvery hair she wasn't too sure. She couldn't comprehend anything short of the pain she felt in her belly. She felt herself being turned and something was placed into her mouth. It was in Akari's hand.

Whatever it was that she was drinking, it was cool, and felt great on her parched throat. She didn't want to stop drinking the cool liquid. But it was pulled from her mouth and a cloth was placed onto her forehead once again. The twin pulled back back and put her back onto his shoulder and patted her back.

She couldn't help that she had fallen back asleep. She closed her eyes feeling someone run their fingers over her head.

When she woke up again she was being fed something very bland, and salty. She swallowed the concoction and shuttered. She felt someone run their fingers over her head and put something into her mouth. The pill had a horrible flavor, but there was that cool drink again. She felt the spoon tap her lip again and she opened her mouth.

She didn't want anymore of...whatever it was, she really didn't yet here she was eating more of it. A soft chuckle echoed in her ear. They said something and the other nodded. They both looked worse for wear too, like they had been on the run for several days now. Just how long had she been asleep? Sleep...she felt a soft finger run along her neck coaxing her to swallow the food. Did she look like an infant? Where did Akari go? It was just the twins now...home? She was a trainer, maybe she was off again?

She couldn't help it though, she found herself falling back asleep. Another mouth full, and that dreaded finger and she was out once again.

She opened her eyes feeling something cold along her back. A wet cloth washing the sweat from her body. Something a mother would do for a child whose body was drenched. She knew she wasn't doing so well, but these two...

"Why?" She whispered. The hand paused as he heard the word.

"Because..." That was all she heard.

She heard soft beeping above her. She opened her eyes to see bare white walls, it smelled of bleach, a machine with a heart monitor. The room was empty, and she was all alone. Of course she was...she was always alone. Although that was how she was forever meant to be.

She looked outside the window and saw that the snow was falling heavily. She looked around at the nurse who walked in. She placed food down on the tray. It looked like a bowl of soup, a roll, eggs, and what was that...

"Oh! You're awake." The nurse smiled as she placed the plate onto the table and tapped the button on the side of the bed. "Go ahead and eat all that you can. I know it won't be much, they said you were out for nearly a week."

They...they said it? What would she expect from someone like them? They lead busy lives and they were part of the subway. Busy all the time. Why would they want someone like her?

"They went to sign some paperwork and they'll be back soon enough." Sure they would, they probably...

"Soup! Again!" Emmet's boisterous voice called out as he walked in with a plate of his own. He sat down and pointed at his sandwich. "It's like they don't know how to make a decent ham and cheese sandwich either. No mayo."

Lake looked at the veggie soup and then at Emmet and pointed at it trying to say something, but nothing came out. She felt a hand on her head as Ingo whispered to her, almost too afraid to say anything too loud for fear of her running off again.

"The doctor says that your voice box will take a little while to begin to work again. " He held up an inhaler and sat it down on the table.

It wouldn't be the first time that happened.

"Go ahead and eat what you can. We'll go home afterward." Emmet said as he shoved the last of his sandwich into his mouth and swallowed the rest of the orange juice.
