I woke up all wet.
"What the- Where am I?" I got up from the dirt ground.
"Am I in a storm? How the hell did I get here?" All of the trees around me where shaking violently and it was raining like crazy.
"The lighthouse? Maybe I'll be safe over there." I saw the lighthouse that sits on the shore of Arcadia Bay and started walking to it. The closer I got the bigger and more intense the storm got, until I saw a tornado the size of ten of them combined, spinning towards the town.I got up to the lighthouse and saw a person walking further away behind me. It was a girl.
"Hello?! Who's there?!" I shouted but then heard a loud crack above me as the top of the lighthouse broke and began to fall on top of me.
I jumped a little in my seat as I woke up, still in class.
"It was just a bad dream. Thank god. I can't keep sleeping in class or I'm gonna get expelled again. Rachel's dad is the reason I'm back in Blackwell in the first place. I can't screw up my second shot." I said to myself as Mr. Jefferson was lecturing the class as usual.
"I don't remember falling asleep though. Weird."
I looked through my stuff. Jefferson is having this big contest and whoever wins with the best picture gets it put in an art gallery. I've been really into the arts recently, more painting than anything but photography is just one of the electives I got.
A girl across the room took a selfie under the table.
"I believe Max has taken what you call, a selfie." Mr. Jefferson said and went on to keep talking about the history of selfies.
Max? That name sounds familiar...
He asked her a question but she didn't know the answer so of course, Victoria Chase had to swoop in and just ruin the moment. Classic Victoria.
The bell rang and everyone including myself was ready to leave immediately.
I walked out even though Mr. Jefferson was still talking.
"Hey Ethan!" Dana waved at me.
"How's it going?" I waved back and kept walking.I took my phone out of my pocket.
chloe: i left your truck in the parking lot. i'll be there in a few just gotta do something.
ethan: sweet, meet you there.Chloe and I dated but it faded after a while. We're still really good friends though.
I left the main building and walked to the dorm parking lot.
I should probably go to my room and leave my bag. Oh well.
I hopped in the front seat of my truck and took out my phone as I waited for Chloe.
Everything felt fuzzy, colors got bright and I had a piercing headache.
And then I woke up in Mr. Jefferson's class. Again.
What the... What the fuck is going on? Did I go back in time?
Mr. Jefferson was giving the same lecture as he was earlier.
There's no way. How??
"I believe Max has taken what you call, a selfie."
He said the same thing again. What in the world is happening?
He asked the same girl the same question, but this time she knew the answer.
The bell rang and the girl rushed out of the class. I stumbled trying to grab my bag but eventually got it and went to go find the girl to see if she knew what was going on. I saw her walk into the girl's bathroom and a few seconds later the fire alarm went off.
My phone buzzed.
chloe: i left your truck in the parking lot. give me a few minutes i'm almost done putting up rachel's posters.
ethan: thanks. i would've done it but i had class.
chloe: of course.The missing posters.
I walked to the parking lot as we all got rushed out of the building because of the alarm. As I got there I saw Nathan Prescott trying to fight the same girl as before.
She knows something.
I walked behind him, grabbing him and throwing him off to the side.
"Hey. You okay-" I was right in her face so it was easy to see what she looked like.
"Max? Max Caulfield?" I said in shock.
"Ethan?" She said back, also in shock."No one pushes me.. NO ONE!" Nathan screamed as he got up and tried to hit me but I ducked under and hit him, throwing him on the ground again.
A car drove up to us and I realized it was my
truck."Chloe?"
"Max??"They both stood shocked to see each other.
"Hate to interrupt this reunion but let's go now!" I said to them because I didn't want to get caught fighting.
Chloe moved into the middle of the seat, Max on the right side and me in the driver's spot. I drove away and onto the street, away from Blackwell.
"Man. Nathan Prescott is messed up. And dangerous. This day never ends." Max said.
"Tell me about it." I said.
"Oh and thanks, Chloe!" Chloe said.
"After five years. You're still Max Caulfield." I said.
"Don't give us the guilty face. At least pretend you're glad to see us." Chloe said.
"I am seriously glad to see you guys. Oh, and thanks, both of you. It makes perfect sense I'd see you guys today." Max said.
"Yeah, it has been that kind of day." I said.
"So what did that freak want with you?" Chloe said.
"I have no idea. I know he's a Prescott." Max said.
"And an asshole. Ethan really stood up for you." Chloe said and nudged me.
"Yeah. I owe you big time." Max said to me.
"You're not the only one in debt, and you're already causing trouble." Chloe said.
"I thought it would be quiet here. Feels so weird to be back." Max said.
"So I'm guessing Seattle sucked?" I said.
"I guess. It was cool but... I felt kinda lonely, out of my league." Max said.
"I would think you'd fit right in with the art school hipsters." Chloe said.
"Right. You look like the cover of Hipster Girl dot com." Max said and I chuckled.
"At least you're still a smartass." Chloe said.
"That's why I'm here." Max said.
"You came back for Blackwell. And for Mark Jefferson." I said.
"You know him?" Max said.
"We're in the same class, Max. I guess neither of us talked enough in it to notice." I said.
"Those that can't do, teach. I'm glad you found a reason to come back." Chloe said.
"Don't you think I'm happy to see you?" Max said.
"No. You were happy to wait five years without a call, or even a text." Chloe said, angrily.
"I'm sorry. I know things were tough on you when I left. Both of you." Max said.
"How do you know? You weren't even here." Chloe said.
"I didn't order my parents to move specifically to fuck you over, Chloe." Max said.
"You've been at Blackwell for almost a month without telling me." Chloe said. They kept arguing and I was just focusing on driving.
"I just wanted to settle in first and not be such a shy cliché geek." Max said.
"I bet you don't use these sad excuses for Mr, Jefferson. Don't use them on me, Max." Chloe said. There was a silence. Max grabbed a camera from her bag that looked broken.
"Broken. Aw man are you cereal?"
"Wow. Been a while since I heard that one." I said.
"Not everything changed. Except my camera has finally taken a shit," Max said.
"My step-douche has a boatload of tools. Maybe you can fix it in my place." Chloe said.
"I need very specific tiny tools." Max said.
"Nerd alert! My stepdad has a fully stocked garage. And he actually is a tiny tool." Chloe said and I chuckled.
"Welcome home, Max." I said.
