You awoke with a startle. You could hear your heart pounding in your chest and the soft patter of rain hitting the window outside. Your eyes sleepily peered at the clock on the bedside table; 9:04 AM it read. You let out a small yawn and turned over in your bed.

“Good morning, beautiful.” You mumbled. Instead of your lips meeting the soft skin of your lovers cheek, they hit something hairy…furry to be exact.

“Ace!” You exclaimed after peeking one eye open. You sat up and scolded her, “You’re not supposed to be up here.” You wiped the dog fur off your lips and looked at your furry companion sternly. The dog whined, his big brown eyes stared at you in sorrow. He snuggled deeper into his own mess of blankets, using the extra pillow as his own.

You sighed staring at your puppy dog eyes, “I know, I know. I miss her too.” You said, rubbing his head gently. You turned to the nightstand and, for a moment, a smile ghosted your lips. Fingers tentatively picked up the silver picture frame. You carefully ran your finger tips over the broken glass casing the photograph.

“I miss her too, Ace. I miss her so fucking much.” You repeated. Eyes ran over the photograph. Although you had seen it over a million times, each time made you smile, whether it be a genuinely happy one, a sisyphean one, or a heartbroken one. A year ago if you saw this photo, a bright smile would emerge and your heart would race as your mind tried to figure out how you deserved someone so spectacular in your life. Today, you looks at it with an ache in your heart and a sad smile on your face, wondering how you lost someone so amazing. Oh that’s right- your mind reminds you of the argument that changed your life forever.

You remembers the fateful night better than you would like to. You had been stressed the week leading up to it. That night specifically you would count as the grand finale-the depressing grand finale. You had a photoshoot as well as small interviews here and there; at the end of the week, you would be flying out to London for a few more months to film for Jumanji. Ace had also been sick that week, placing more worries on your mind.

Your two year anniversary was coming up and you had no idea what to get her, therefore you spent a lot of time searching through stores and seeking advice from friends.

In the duration of your relationship, Aaliyah and you had always been trusting of each other, leading her to rarely believe any of the media’s rumors. It wasn’t the rumors anyone spread that caused your split, it was the harsh words she received from fans and the media combined. Earlier that day, you had posted a candid and rather unattractive photo of her online. You claimed she looked beautiful, but she knew what the outcome would be and the terrible backlash she would be subject to.

Liyah begged you to take it down, but you refused since you saw nothing wrong with it. When she told you, she were afraid of the hate, you didn’t take it well. You was loyal to your fans and both of you knew that, so blaming your worries on your loyal fans didn’t settle well in your mind. The stress in your system caused you to have a quick temper and you was unable to consider her reasoning.
