"Run! The portal is about to close!" my best friend's voice reverberated throughout the enormous, empty room. We could barely hear it. It had no walls to bounce off of, since the room was so big we couldn't even see them. The only source of light was the bright, neon blue and purple portal standing tall on a metallic platform suspended in the middle of the room. Below it and all around it, the abyss. Not a flat surface in sight.
Jaeyoung, Yuto and I were slowly getting closer, our quick steps making loud clanking noises as they hit the metallic bridge leading to the platform. Behind us, the sound of dozens of heavy steps was getting closer and closer. The guards of the secret base were on our backs. We had to run fast. The fastest we've ever run. One final sprint and we'd reach the portal, jump into the light and reach the place we've always dreamed to live in, a place where we wouldn't be judged, a place where we could live in peace: New World. It was only a few dozen of meters away. We could already smell the fresh breeze that is rumored to welcome you as you enter the portal, a feeling of rebirth that accompanies you as you take the first step onto the colorful, untamed fields of New World... Except for the fact that We wouldn't have been able to experience it.
As we ran, almost breathless, the portal started unexpectedly shrinking. Hyojin, who was still standing beside it, started visibly panicking, violently flailing his arms and screaming incomprehensible, jumbled words. Our calculations were wrong.
The portal wasn't supposed to close this quickly. Jaeyoung, Yuto and I were supposed to reach it mere seconds before it started closing. The plan was going swimmingly well up until that point, we distracted the guards while Hyojin, Minkyun and Changyun reached the portal and opened it with the key. Everything was calculated perfectly, we were working like swiss clocks, every action, every move took us exactly the time we planned it would take. But apparently, in the grand scheme of things, it wasn't enough. We didn't know where we failed, but at that point it was certain we did.
Soon enough, the portal could barely let one adult through. Minkyun and Changyun were safe, while Hyojin was waiting for us to reach him. But when I realized we wouldn't have been able to make it, I stopped in my tracks and tumbled down, exhausted. Jaeyoung and Yuto understood what I was doing and stopped too, getting on their knees, defeated.
I had almost no air left in my lungs after the extremely long run, but I had to shout "Hyojin! Cross it! We won't make it!"
As we put our hands up, surrendering, we heard the heavy steps of the guards getting louder and louder. I looked at my best friend standing at the edge of the portal one last time.
"We'll get out of there, we promise!"
That was the last thing we heard before the portal closed, a mere second after Hyojin crossed it.
