When we got caught, we feared the worst would happen to us.

Even though the new Emperor, who simply goes by the name "Genesis", has been in charge of the country for only a few months, he made his ideas clear. He plans to go back and undo all the progress his four ancestors made. He wants to go back to darker times, or as he likes to call it, to a more "traditional era". It's all bullcrap. He wants to strip all the inhabitants of this planet of their rights, especially minorities. Everyone is going to suffer with the choices he is making, but not enough people seem to realize that. When he ascended the throne, all six of us had a bad feeling. And we were right. That's when we started taking the proposal of moving to New World into account.

We heard so many legends about it, and before Emperor Genesis ascended, we made a lot of research on it. We were so lucky we decided to prepare everything in advance. Life here on Dry Ice wasn't the worst before The Era of Genesis, but the urban legend of New World was so fascinating... It sounded too good to be true. However, when we were able to build a transmitter to communicate with the people of this magical utopia, we discovered it was reality...

There is only one way to get to New World, and that is going through an ancient portal that can be opened only for a very limited time with a special key. Only a few of these portals exist in our universe. No one knows who built them, how or when they did it. Moreover, these portals are built with such advanced technology that to this day no manmade weapon was able to destroy one, no matter the force or weight of it. We're somewhat lucky to have one here on Dry Ice; I say somewhat because it is hidden in the depths of a secret military base, only accessible to high-rank members of the government. I'm still amazed how we managed to infiltrate without many problems, but at least we know it's possible.

These portals are indeed a mystery, but they do work, otherwise there would be no people on New World. If I had to narrate every little research made on these portals and their history, I might as well talk until I lose my voice. And we don't even know how much of it is actually true. It is undoubtedly a fascinating topic, and there are still so many things we aren't aware of. We would have researched more if only Emperor Genesis didn't impose a ban on all the books that even only mentioned New World. If we didn't make prior research, we would have been stuck here forever. And we definitely didn't want that.

That's why we were so scared when we surrendered. Would they kill us? No one knew how the new Emperor would handle trespassers whose goal is to open a forbidden portal to escape this planet. It was a first as far as we knew. No one tried this before during his reign...

But we survived. After more or less one year in jail, Seungjun, Jaeyoung and I were finally free... Almost.

After being imprisoned, we lost everything. Our jobs, our home, our personal belongings. We had nothing. It felt as if we were just born and our parents were nowhere to be found. But we were lucky enough to have two parental figures to help us. I still kept in contact with my parents, unlike Jaeyoung and Seungjun. I feared they would reject me after I was thrown into jail, but they didn't I was so relieved we had someone to count on. They even found a little apartment where the three of us could live in.
It wasn't much, the furniture was old and we had the bare minimum to survive: a minuscule kitchen with a dining table that could lose a leg every second, a bathroom in which you could barely turn around your own axis and also had to wait at least 5 minutes for warm water to finally start flowing, and finally a small bedroom with three single mattresses as hard as rocks.
Despite being a literal hole, it was our little hole, the only place where we could truly be free. Why? Well, after being "released", the government didn't let us go that easily for such a big crime. We were under government control. We were often spied on while going out, they knew our every move. It was like living with a serial killer breathing on your neck. We never knew if one day they would come to knock on our door and arrest us again, or worse.

We didn't want to live like that. Sooner or later we would have had to resume our research and make another key to open that damn portal again. We had to escape no matter what.
