You'd really expected it to rain. The forecast had said so, both on the Weather app on your phone, and on the television. That man with an irritating nasally voice had repeated over and over again that he was, "aaabsolutely sure thunderstorms were on the horizon." He really liked the phrase "on the horizon".Not that you watched the news much anyway. You'd begged your older brother Hyujin to shut off the television while you worked on the floor plans on your newest house. He'd just laughed at you and changed the channel to something even louder.
Now, you were sitting sprawled out on a beach chair, your head resting on your arms as you tried to tan your legs. You and your friends had come over just to hang out, but seeing as storms were nowhere "on the horizon", you decided to hang out by your pool.
No clouds were visible in the sky, aside from one cute little wispy one drifting by lazily. The sun was a comforting warmth on your back, as you nearly drifted off to sleep. The birds chirped in the trees, eager for the summer to really start. Clearly, they were enjoying the surprise nice weather as much as you and your friends.
"I can't believe the forecast was wrong!" Wang Mya, one of your best friends, commented from the chair to your right. "I wore three layers to work, and nearly sweated through all of them!"
"Cheers to that, and cheers to never going back to university ever again!" Nakano Riley, your other best friend sitting to your left, lifted up her bright blue fruity drink in cheers.
Your friends had all come over to your house to celebrate graduating from university last week. It had been a long time coming for all of them, especially Riley, who had taken a gap year to travel all around Europe before deciding to attend university for animation. You and Mya had entered university in Korea at age eighteen, and gotten out on time, thank god. She'd majored in dance while you majored in interior design. It was all celebration for the rest of the summer, as far as you were concerned.
"Hell yes," Mya sighed, cheersing you and Riley before taking a small drink of her strawberry cocktail, wincing. "Those were four long years. And I still hate alcohol."
"They were painful," you agreed, taking a tip of your peachy cocktail. "Damn, I make a good cocktail. You'd better say thank you!"
"Thank you Laska," Mya and Riley said in unison, rolling their eyes at you playfully.
"Any news with that guy?" Riley suddenly sat up and propped her face on an elbow, piercing you with a curious stare.
"Oh yeah! Didn't you go on a date last night?" Mya took another large swallow of her drink, spilling some on her cheek. You immediately tossed her a napkin.
"The date went great," you started, and Riley reached out for a first-bump, which you returned. "But then my brother..."
"Oh no," Mya groaned dramatically.
"What did he do?" Riley frowned suspiciously.
"You already know," you sighed, taking a gulp of your drink, which made your stomach immediately heat up with the warmth of the alcohol. "He freaked out and told me I couldn't see him anymore. I don't think it's worth it to continue the relationship anyway. It was a good date, but nothing great. But of course, you know Hyunjin. He didn't care if I thought this guy was my soulmate, or if he was a loser. I feel like a nun."
"You're not a nun!" Mya said immediately. "You're fun!"
"Hyujin just cares about you, right?" Riley prodded. "He wants you to be safe."
"Yeah, but he could let me at least talk to another person of the opposite sex, rather than hiding me away in our house," you whined. "I want to go somewhere this summer. I can't stand being stuck in that house for two months! Please, take me somewhere!"
"Where do you wanna go?" Riley asked eagerly, leaning closer to you on her chair. "I'm down for anywhere."
"Me too!" Mya exclaimed. "As long as you don't force me to drink this anymore."
You laughed, taking the cocktail from her and taking a long drink. "There's soda in the cooler. I knew you wouldn't like this, I didn't even expect you to drink that much!"
"You were testing me?!" Mya pouted. "That's mean!"
"Just a joke!" You defended yourself. "But for real, I want to go somewhere!"
"When?" Riley asked. "Won't Hyunjin be home? He'll freak out."
"Well then he's gonna have to learn to deal with it!" You declared, sitting up in your chair. "We're leaving tomorrow!"
"This is so exciting!" Mya gasped. "I've never taken an impulse trip like this!"
"We have to go to the beach," Riley said. "It's been forever since I've been to a proper ocean, and there's hot guys there."
"You're so right," you muse, running a hand through your hair in thought. Where was a beach in Korea?
A place immediately appeared in your mind. A place that was known for its beauty, and as the perfect vacation spot for young people.
"Girls, we're going to Jeju Island."
laska's note -
this is the most i've written in awhile, which is kind of sad tbh. i know this chapter was kinda short and lame, but i wanted to introduce the girlies and get the ball rolling a little! i swear the next couple of chapters will get more interesting, even though alaska and felix's relationship/interactions won't really start until around chapter five or so. i know i made hyunjin kind of an overbearing brother, but i swear he loves alaska and i love hyunjin, there's no hyunjin slander in this story!question of the day -
