PIPER AND I CORNERED THE PRINCESS as Jason and Leo went off to check out the living fur coats. Anna trailed behind us, glaring daggers at Medea, but I knew she was secretly just staring (out of the corner of her eyes) at Jason. Really, it was kinda obvious. But, it didn't matter. What mattered more was the lie Anna said some time ago. When Medea asked her what price she would pay for love. While Anna had smoothly lied, she was tapping her thumb with her index finger on her left hand. Even though it was rolled into a fist, that was a tell-tale sign that she was lying and that scared me.
I knew how crazy she was for Jason and know how crazy she still is. He is the one person that knows everything about her and never judges her. So, although she acted like he was a person who mattered less than the 'greater good', I knew that her heart broke into a million pieces when she found out what happened. Anna Danvers may look strong (and she is, don't get me wrong), but underneath that brave personality that she had created on the outside: lay a person, a teenager, broken beyond repair.
The person trailing behind Medea was not the real Anna. Nope. It was the revised version of herself she had created to look strong. And only three people know the real Anna Danvers. While she was just as (if not more) strong, powerful, and brave as the present Anna... she was more.
She didn't glare daggers at people 24/7. She didn't think everything was connected to a war plan. She wasn't a pessimist. But, most of all, she wasn't afraid to feel.
The real Anna had fun, teased people, flirted constantly without reason. The real Anna smiled. She wasn't afraid of showing her emotions. She saw the reality of the situation. True... she was just as good of a leader and a soldier she is now, but she was more than that. She was a person, a human being who laughed, enjoyed, let loose and wasn't always on guard. She wasn't just the emotionless warrior... no, fighter... she is today.
This has been the case since her first quest when we were seven. After the quest, she seemed more mature, more grown up (even if we were only seven). She started to loose that easy-going attitude of hers when she sassed all the time. And although she still sasses (way to much), now it's for bite, not for fun.
The only time she actually seemed like the old her was when she was with Jason. Usually, once she would return to her cabin, she would cry (due to panic attacks, Anna has never been caught crying sanely) and sob (except the nights she was with Jason, there used to be... different noises). No one else in the camp would hear this, except me, as my cabin had really thin walls so it was impossible not to. I especially regretted it when Percy and Annabeth started dating. Then it was hell all day and night long...
"Hey, what's the game plan" Anna suddenly said, making me swirl and put my knife on her throat. I think she expected it, as she just lazily held up her own sword, making it crash with mine.
"Oh, don't sneak up on me like that" I said, and she just shrugged 'whatever' "and you're the captain"
She was going to say something but Piper interrupted, "You want them shopping for their deaths?" she demanded. Ah! Piper, beautifully, wonderful Piper. With her voice and that charming personality I couldn't help but stare at her like and idiot. Seeing this, Anna gave me a nudge, the tiniest of tiny smile on her face. She winked at Piper, then at me.
"Mmm." The princess blew the dust off a display case of swords. "I'm a seer, my dear. I know your little secret. But we don't want to dwell on that, do we? The boys are having such fun." What secret? I looked at Anna, and she had that look. The look she had when she knew she had doe the right thing by not trusting a person. I always hated that look, but now I especially hated it, because it was directed at Piper.
Leo laughed, and I turned my head, watching as he tried on a hat that seemed to be made from enchanted raccoon fur. Its ringed tail twitched, and it's little legs wiggled frantically as Leo walked. Jason was ogling the men's sportswear. Boys interested in shopping for clothes? A definite sign they were under an evil spell.
I glared at the princess. "Who are you?"
"I told you, my dear. I'm the Princess of Colchis."
"Where's Colchis?" Piper asked. Oh no!
The princess's expression turned a little sad. "Where was Colchis, you mean. My father ruled the far shores of the Black Sea, as far to the east as a Greek ship could sail in those days. But Colchis is no more—lost eons ago."
"Eons?" Piper asked. The princess looked no more than fifty, but a look of realization crept up on her face. "How old are you?"
The princess laughed. "A lady should avoid asking or answering that question. Let's just say the, ah, immigration process to enter your country took quite a while. My patron finally brought me through. She made all this possible." The princess swept her hand around the department store.
My mouth tasted like metal.
"Your patron" Anna stated, oozing the 'I ain't taking any shit' vibe. Like I said, Anna2.0
"Oh, yes. She doesn't bring just anyone through, mind you—only those who have special talents, such as me. And really, she insists on so little—a store entrance that must be underground so she can, ah, monitor my clientele; and a favor now and then. In exchange for a new life? Really, it was the best bargain I'd made in centuries."
Run, I signalled Piper, my eyes wide. Anna and I will handle it. Get out of here.
But, either she didn't understand or didn't care and stood her ground. And then JG called out "Hey, check it out!"
From a rack labeled distressed clothing, he held up a purple T-shirt like the one he'd worn on the school field trip—except this shirt looked as if it had been clawed by tigers. A Camp-Jupiter shirt.
Jason frowned. "Why does this look so familiar?"
"Jason, it's like yours," Anna said, her tone changing just the slightest. "Now we really have to leave." Jason concentrated at her for a moment, as if her words had an effect, before he went to his dazed state again. If Anna's words weren't working, then our chances seemed very low.
"Nonsense," the princess said. "The boys aren't done, are they? And yes, my dear. Those shirts are very popular—trade-ins from previous customers. It suits you."
Leo picked up an orange Camp Half-Blood tee with a hole through the middle, as if it had been hit by a javelin. Next to that was a dented bronze breastplate pitted with corrosion—acid, maybe?—and a Roman toga slashed to pieces and stained with something that looked disturbingly like dried blood.
"Your Highness," Piper said "Why don't you tell the boys how you betrayed your family? I'm sure they'd like to hear that story." Oh I love her!
