Derrick's pov
I was terrified. As soon as I heard the shattering of glass from the kitchen I knew what had happened . . . Ayden's heat had finally overwhelmed him. Gently lifting him into my arms, I carried him into my bedroom, laying him on my bed; where he belonged.
"Alpha, you need to move out of the way so I can tend to him."
I turned to Dr Douglas, our pack's doctor, but couldn't hold his sympathetic gaze.
"This . . . This is my fault, isn't it?"
"Alpha, I was there when your father gave his order. I of all people understand."
"He knew! My father knew the whole time that Ayden was my mate! Why would he ___________."
"You already know the answer to that Derrick. If you mated with Ayden your wolf would____________."
A whimper cut of the doctor's words and we both turned our attention to Ayden in time to see his eyes slowly open. He looks up at me for several seconds before shifting his attention to Dr Douglas.
"D-Dr Douglas . . . what's . . . what's wrong with me?"
"Your heat overwhelmed your body Ayden . . . you'll be fine in a few hours."
"I-I feel so hot."
"I know. I'm going to give you something to cool your body down . . . it'll make you feel weak, but don't try to fight against it or it'll make you feel worse."
Ayden nodded his head in understanding and held himself still as Dr Douglas injected the medicine into his vein. After a few minutes, he started shivering and gasping like he couldn't get enough air into his lungs.
