Maverick's pov
Mate, must find mate! Nothing else matters but Ayden, not my brother and his mate, not my pack and certainly not my stupid selfish human, I'd abandon all of it to have my mate by my side and now that the annoying voice of my other half has finally faded into nothing I can focus on my mission.
"I'm sorry, but I've traveled this far with you and I never even asked your name."
Smirking inwardly, I turned in the direction Ayden's voice was coming, I finally had him! I catch up to the Ayden and the strange man quickly' making sure to keep downwind of the pair as their conversation catches my attention.
"I have many names, white wolf. Fate, Destiny, Circumstance, Karma and Kismet are among my favorites."
"I don't understand. "
"Then let me ask you a question. How does the Moon Goddess choose which wolves mate with each other? How does she bring second chance mates together if the first mates reject each other? Well, tell me what you think."
"I . . . I don't know. "
"The truth is the Moon Goddess doesn't do all the work on her own. I use my gifts to find those that are compatible with each other and she attracts them to each other with the mate's bond."
"But Derrick didn't reject or accept me, what do you do in a situation like that?"
"We stand back and let the mates figure it out on their own . . . except in extreme cases like Kareen and Zander. There's a reason Kareen wasn't able to bear pups . . . the Moon Goddess and I decided to leave him barren until he found a mate that would be true to him . . . to tell you the truth, I thought he was going to find someone more worthy of him, I guess he truly loves Zander."
"A-Are you saying . . . Kareen is going to have a pup?"
"Of course, he needs to pass on his gifts after all. You need to pass on your gifts as well, Ayden. Don't worry, we'll find you a mate that will accept you completely."
"No."
"I'm sorry, but I'm afraid there's no choice in this, you must pass your gifts on to one of your offspring or they will be lost forever."
"Is that the only thing I'm here for now, to pass on powers I never asked for to a child I will bear with a mate I will never love?"
"Don't you want happiness, white wolf? Surely you don't wish to spend the rest of your life alone."
Ayden didn't reply, instead walking past the man who let him have some space and I whimper softly at the sorrow radiating from my mate, but they didn't seem to notice .
"I never asked for this, Lord Fate. I don't understand, why was I chosen to have this power? Why was I chosen to be the white wolf?"
"For the same reason Prince Kareen was chosen to be a healer. Both the Moon Goddess and I saw something special in the two of you from the moment you were conceived . . . we didn't mean to put so much strain on your lives."
"Then why did you make Derrick my mate? Why did I have to believe he could love me enough to accept me? If he's my mate, why did he push me away?"
The strange man . . Lord Fate's eyes narrowed and his lips pulled into a grim line.
"Do you believe Lady Moon Goddess so cold or Lord Fate so cruel that we entertain ourselves with the suffering of our children?"

"Yes, I choose those who seem compatible as mates and yes Lady Moon Goddess binds them together, but we do not allow ourselves to interfere more than that unless absolutely necessary and this was."
