The charming guy smiles at her, and that's when Diane realizes they've been holding eye contact for way too long.
She blushes slightly then looks away.
"What was that?" She wonders.
"No wonder this is a dream. Such a handsome guy can only exist in dreams! "
So that must be Gilbert..
She quickly turns her attention back to her friends.
"And that's what I told Jimmy before saying goodbye last night." Carolyn continues rambling.
" Oh look who's here to snatch your bestie!" Sarah suddenly exclaims.
They all turn around to see a tall and chic looking guy coming their way.
"Here we go again." Carolyn rolls her eyes. "A girl's worst enemy is her bestfriend's guy bestfriend!" She adds furiously. The two other girls laugh at her mockingly.
"Whose bestfriend?! "Diane wonders.
"Diane, hey!"
"You didn't pick up your phone so I knew where to find you! "Jake speaks.
Diane, totally mesmerized by his presence, only stars at him and doesn't respond.
"Apparently she drank too much last night which resulted to her being weird all day long!" Carolyn says while rolling her eyes.
Jake giggles as he sits besides Diane.
"You drank? I thought you said you'd never drink!" He looks surprised as he asks her.
"I know right?" Carolyn glares at her.
"I thought you said the long history of your family's alcoholism will stop at you? I guess not then." Amy adds sarcasticly.
" I.. I did? Yeah.. I actually-" Diane stutters as she struggles to find an excuse.
"What the hell is going on? What kind of dream is this?
I guess my family's history is the only thing that haven't changed about me" She wonders.
"That was a lie actually. I didn't drink, of course not! I have just been feeling a little down lately." She finally manages to say.
"You're being really weird Diane. Is something going on with you?" Amy asks seriously.
"No. I'm just a little stressed."
"Let's hang out this weekend and party the stress away then!" Sarah exclaims.
"Or have another movie night, since Diane loves that."
"I'd love to." Diane sincerely responds.
A movie night? How long has it been since she last watched a movie with someone else..
"Anyway, I was looking for you to remind you to come watch my play tonight" Jake breaks the silence.
"Your play?"
"See? I knew you'd forget it!"
"He majors in acting, if you also forgot about that." Carolyn says mockingly.
"Amy's major is classical music and Sarah's is acting, by the way" She adds.
"Stop, you're acting as if I lost my memory or something!" Diane protests, trying hard to hide the fact she knows nothing about any of them.
Why can't she just break it to them, that they're just imaginary characters in her dream..
"You actually sound like you did but okay, we'll let that slide." Sarah jokes.
"Well, see you tonight then!"Jake gets up and runs back to his friends.
At this point, Diane starts to question everything. There is no way this is a normal dream. It's taking way too long and everything feels way so real. She's starting to feel eerily nervous about it.
Or perhaps, it has something to do with the wish she made as she blew off her candles last night..
Even though she doesn't believe in miracles or in magic, she now suprisingly finds herself wondering if this reality was actually her wish coming true.
Maybe the whisper of that little wish of hers has been somehow heard." I wish to have a normal life , a life like the one I daydream about everyday "
That's what she quietly whispered that lonely night on her birthday.
There's nothing as desperate as this kind of wish. To wish for the bare minimum. For the things most people take for granted. Is this a dream? Her wish coming true? Or..?
