As we stepped out of the car and made our way to the lake, the question still burned in my mind. Could Mason be a werewolf? I mean, it's a myth; they're not real. Right?
But the could be... There is always that possibility that all things that you think aren't real, are actually real. Could that be the case here? Maybe.
But a werewolf? Really? That's like saying he could vampire. It preposterous to even think that these things are real. They can't be. It's too unbelievable. I just can't wrap my mind around that happening.
Suddenly an arm wrapped around my waist and jolted me backwards. My eyes opened wider as I was pulled out of my thoughts. I looked up to see Mason's chest extremely close to my face. His arm was wrapped around my waist.
"What are you doing?" I asked him.
"What do you mean what am I doing? I'm saving your life."
"How're you sav-" I looked down and noticed that I was literally dangling off the edge of a cliff, nowhere near the path we ere following.
"How did I get off of the path?" I asked him.
"I'm not sure. I was talking to you and then suddenly you veered off of the path so I followed, tying to figure out what you were doing. And I'm glad I did, because if I hadn't, you'd be dead."
"That's weird. I don't even remember getting off of the path. I was just thinking to myself about something and then I was jolted out of my thoughts by you. I am glad you did too by the way."
He smiled and pulled me back onto solid ground where my feet didn't dangle anymore. It felt safer. It felt better; knowing that I wasn't dead or about to be.
"So swimming?" He asked.
"Yes please."
We walked back to the path and made out way to the lake. As soon as I stepped onto the sandy beach, I could feel something was off.
"Mason?" I asked in a hushed voice.
"Yes?"
"Something doesn't feel right."
"Well you did almost walk off of a cliff."
"No, I'm meaning I feel like we are being watched. That kind of not feeling right."
His playful smile faded and I assumed he felt that way too now because he pulled me closer, wrapping his arms around me protectively. His muscles were tense and his eyes searched for something hidden from my eyes in the brush.
"What is it?"
"Shh."
I shut my mouth and stayed quiet; peering into the woods around us trying to get a glimpse of what he had seen that made him pull me in like we were about to be attacked.
A growl rumbled from somewhere and I thought that there was an animal in the woods until I realized the growl was far too close to be coming from the trees. I looked up and my eyes widened when I saw fangs protruding from Mason's top jaw. What was going on?
Something shot out of the tree line and was coming straight for us. I screamed and backed up into Mason, except for the fact that Mason wasn't there anymore. I turned around and saw a huge, black wolf with gleaming, blue eyes; the same wolf that I had seen the other day. The wolf that didn't hurt me but attacked the others who were trying.
The wolf lunged for whatever was coming for me and tackled it to the ground, sending dirt flying and collecting into a cloud. The two wrestled for why seemed like ages until the smaller, gray wolf lay unmoving on the ground underneath the black wolf.
"Mason?" I questioned.
He looked up at me and blinked.
"Is that really you?"
Instead of answering, the wolf lunged at me, but he didn't hit me. There was a thud behind me and when I looked there was a pool of blood surrounding a man dressed in all black with a gun still in his possession, and Mason sitting there in shorts, looking down at the ground, not moving.
"Mason?"
"I'm sorry." He whispered.
I hesitated but then moved towards him and fell on my knees by his side. My hands reached up and cupped the sides of his face, and made him look up at me.
"Why are you sorry?"
"I'm not who you thought I was. I'm a freak."
"Oh, Mason. Is that really what you think of yourself? I mean, yes, this is a lot to take in because I thought werewolves were a myth, but it's not impossible. Mason, you're anything but a freak."
"I let you fall for me without telling you. You fell for a lie. Reagan, you don't deserve me. You deserve someone who won't lie to you."
"No, I fell for Mason. I may not have known what you were, but I knew who you are inside. You may not be human, but I can assure you, you are not a freak."
He sat there and stared at me. His eyes were glazed over and the way the light hit them, it looked like even the slightest gust of wind would shatter them as if they were glass.
"Mason... Please, say something."
Instead of say something, he leaned into me, his hands supping the side of my face like I had done to him, and his lips locking with mine. I let my hands fall to his shoulders and let myself take in the moment. When he pulled away he rested his forehead against mine.
"I love you Reagan."
"I love you too Mason.
