The next morning when I woke up, I was laying sideways on the couch. I could feel arms around me. When I went to turn around, the persons grip became a little tighter. The faint scent of cologne filled my nose and that's when I remembered that I had fallen asleep on the couch against Mason.
I figured he would have gone to his bed.
I felt his face nuzzle its way into the crook of my neck, and I felt shivers fly up my spine. His breath on my neck was unnerving in a good way.
Suddenly he stirred and then sat up. I looked at him and he looked at me. Our eyes locked just like last night.
I suddenly felt my cheeks heat up and I ducked my face, hiding it in the pillow I had been using.
I heard him chuckle, then felt the couch cushion level out. I peeked out from my pillow to see him ascending the stairs. I sprawled out over the couch, stretching and yawning.
Ruth came in and looked at me. She shook her head and chuckled, a smile forming. I couldn't help but laugh.
"What are we having for breakfast?" I asked her.
"I'm not sure what you are having, but I've already had mine."
"What did you have?" I asked, sitting up and looking at her.
"I had oatmeal."
"That sounds good. I used to eat that all the time."
She smiled and started on her cleaning.
I stood up and made my way to the kitchen to find Jackson cooking.
"What are you making?"
He jumped a little. He must not have known I was there.
"Waffles, eggs, and bacon."
"Yum."
He laughed.
"I haven't had waffles in forever."
"Well, I'm glad you're wanting them then."
He turned around and looked at me, his eyes skimming my body from head to toe. I felt my cheeks heat up again and I looked down.
"Well, I'm going to go get dressed." I told him.
He nodded in response and turned back to the stove. I walked out of the kitchen and walked towards my room. Mason was walking down the stairs as I was going up. He was dressed in blue jeans, a dark gray t-shirt, a grey beanie and a black leather jacket. His black hair nicely combed.
"Where are you going?" I asked.
He looked at me briefly while continuing down the stairs, not stopping.
"I'm going out for breakfast with someone."
"Ohh, have a nice time."
"Thank you." He said, and walked out the door.
I stood there, shocked and nearly unable to control my feelings. Ruth stood at the bottom of the stairs, looking up at me with a sympathetic look. I blinked rapidly trying to clear the tears that had started to form.
I turned and raced up the remaining stairs, two at a time.
I ran into my room, up those stairs, and straight to my bed. I curled up underneath the blankets and encased myself in darkness.
How could I ever think he would actually like me! I'm his 'toy'. I mean nothing to him. I can't believe I actually let myself get somewhat attached to the idea that he could fall for me. He probably has a girlfriend that doesn't know about me. Or if she does, she doesn't care. Who would care about me?
The tears were coming faster and faster the more I lay there and think about it.
After a while I felt a hand on my shoulder, through the blankets. I automatically knew it was Ruth. I sniffled and sat up, wiping my eyes. I looked at her. She was sitting at the edge of my bed.
"Are you okay?" she asked.
I shook my head, and looked down, the tears threatening to come back. She held her arms out and I gladly leaned into her and let her envelop me in a hug, some of the pain going away immediately.
"Please don't tell anyone I cried over him." I whispered.
She nodded and promised me.
When I felt better, she left me alone to fix myself. I walked into the bathroom and looked into the mirror. I immediately cringed. I looked horrible. Sighing, I turned on the water and washed my face. When I was done, I dried my face off and went into my closet.
I changed into a pair of black sweats and a dark green sweater shirt. I brushed my hair out and brushed my teeth. When I felt I was presentable, I walked downstairs.
Jackson, Maria, and Ruth were all in the dining room, sitting at the table. I walked in and all eyes turned to me. I was so glad my face was back to its normal color. It didn't look like I had cried at all any more, but I knew Ruth knew I did.
I sat down next to Ruth and Jackson stood up, and began filling a plate.
"I'm not hungry." I told him.
He looked at me worried.
"Are you sure?"
"Yes."
"Okay."
I sat there with them and talked, laughing at some points. After we were done eating, we all helped cleaning up and then Maria turned on music. We all danced around the living room. Ruth just sat there laughing and shaking her head.
I smiled and laughed, having a good time with the people that mattered. I wasn't going to let Mason ruin my life any more than he already has. I was going to try to put him aside and not get attached again.
