Probably because a wealthy king offered a lot for your hand. Greedy bastard.

When the clock in your room hit midnight you slipped out of bed and dressed. Making sure you were presentable, you slipped out the caste and began the track up to the cave in the mountain side. It was a long and cruel hike that took you till the sun was almost rising to complete. When you arrived at the head of the cave you light your torch and came face to face with the dragon

"Well hello, I was just about to go and see about collecting you." 

"Well I'm here so leave my kingdom alone." 

The dragon grabbed you with its mouth, walking you over to a bed made of furs and shiny items. It dropped you onto it, making sure you hit the soft furs on the corner "That was my promise. Your hand for your peoples lives, my queen."
