FLEEING FROM HER house looked too easy but that was because she pretended she was just going to help the movers who came a few minutes after Leonidas left.

After moving all her things to her new apartment uptown and arranging them, she grabbed her bag and left the apartment. It was almost evening when she arrived.

Ophelia kept her movements as normal as possible, not to raise any suspicions. Leonidas' people could be anywhere and everywhere. Even the driver of the car she was currently in, could be one of them.

When the car stopped in front of the hotel, Ophelia paid the driver and got out. Monica was at the front desk with the other receptionist when she arrived.

Looking up, Monica looked surprised to see Ophelia.

"Isn't today your day off?" Monica asked.

"It is but I need to do something in the hotel. Have you seen Darius today?" Ophelia asked, her voice urgent.

"No, I haven't. But on break, Chloe and I talked about him, and she said he didn't spend the night here. According to her, he only came in early this morning.

"That's right, you never told me what happened after you guys left yesterday. Where did he take you to?" Monica rambled but Ophelia couldn't be bothered with answering her questions.

"I will answer all your questions later, Nika, but first I have to find Darius. What is his room number?" Ophelia asked, realising that she didn't look at the room number when rushing out of the room yesterday evening.

"He stays in the penthouse on the first floor," Monica said, giving Ophelia a weird look that Ophelia ignored.

Overlooking the looks from both Monica and the other receptionist whom she had forgotten the name of, Ophelia walked to the elevator and pressed the first floor.

In a few minutes, Ophelia reached the penthouse and knocked on the door. The door opened before she could knock for a second time to reveal Samuel. His eyes widened upon seeing her.

"Luna," He said and quickly bowed to her, causing her to shuffle back feeling strange about the action.

"Don't do that," she muttered, then looked into the room, hoping to find Darius inside but saw no trace of him.

"Where's Darius?" she asked.

"Something happened last night and the Alpha had to take his wolf out on a run today. He took some guards with him and asked me to stay back in case you were to come around," Samuel explained.

"Is he okay?" Ophelia asked, feeling strangely scared at the thought of something bad happening to Darius.

"The Alpha is fine for now," Samuel said, and Ophelia narrowed her eyes at him.

"What do you mean 'for now'?"

Samuel hesitated, looking reluctant to tell her.

"Well, don't stop, out with it. Tell me, Samuel. What is wrong with Darius?!" Ophelia said, her voice unconsciously coming out demanding.

"Then, I would be defying the Alpha's orders if I tell you but then again, it's for his own good. I guess I'll have to accept any punishment that the Alpha will give me once he finds out that I told you," Sam said, making Ophelia more worried.

For him to be this scared of saying it to her, meant that whatever was happening to Darius was something big.

Samuel opened the door wider to let her in. "Come in, Luna, you'll need to sit down for this."

Slowly, Ophelia walked into the room. She didn't fail to notice how Samuel kept the half open.

"An unmated male cannot be seen alone with an unmated female in a room without the presence of a third person.

"It's worse since you are the unmated mate of the Alpha King. So, since we cannot involve a third person, I can only leave the door open," Samuel explained, seeing that she caught sight of his actions.

Ophelia nodded and sat on the couch, giving Samuel enough space to make him feel less uncomfortable. The poor man looked so awkward despite his cold exterior.

"Please tell me what is going on," Ophelia requested softly.

And with a nod, Samuel began.

"I know the Alpha told you just a little about mates so I will fill in the blanks that he skipped. First of all, it wasn't easy for the Alpha to find you.

"Although he waited his entire life for you, he could only begin his search once he turned two hundred and fifty. So in total, he searched for you for seven hundred and forty-nine years, eleven months and twenty-three days. He-"

Samuel was going to continue but Ophelia cut him off.

"Hold on a minute. Exactly how old is Darius?"

"To be precise, Alpha is nine hundred and ninety-nine years, eleven months and eight days old-"

Ophelia cut him off again. "Nine hundred and what?!"

"Nine hundred and-" Sam was going to repeat himself when Ophelia cut him off again.

"I heard you the first time, I just didn't think you were serious enough to repeat yourself. Is Darius truly that old?" Ophelia asked wide-eyed.

"Didn't the Alpha tell you about our long lifespan?" Sam asked, confused.

"He did but I wasn't thinking clearly yesterday. Honestly after the morning that I just had, I haven't been able to properly think about everything that happened the previous night with Darius," Ophelia said.

"At this age, you can say Alpha is nearing his prime years," Samuel told her.

"Reaching his prime years, you say?" Ophelia asked more to herself than him, and he nodded.

"Anyways, go on," She said, wanting to hear more about mates, though deep down she knew she only wanted to get her mind off the fact that Darius was older than her grandmother's grandmother.

"A werewolf's prime age is one thousand years. And to control the population of werewolves, the goddess made it so that once werewolves reach their prime without finding their mates, their wolves would turn feral.

"Their bodies would grow weak, and their minds would deteriorate, and in the end, they would die.

"Although the Alpha might have found you, it doesn't exempt him from the curse," Samuel said, instantly crushing the hope that Ophelia was building during his explanation.

"But why not? Could it be because I am human?" she asked with a frown.

He shook his head. "It's because his mate hasn't been marked and mated."

"What do you mean to be marked and mated?" Ophelia questioned hesitantly.

"Err... I would have preferred if the Alpha could explain this himself but since he is so adamant about not telling you about it, I guess I have no choice but to tell you," Samuel said, scratching his head, once more looking uncomfortable.

Looking at Samuel in that state, Ophelia wondered what could be capable of making him this embarrassed.

No matter how much she wanted to push Samuel to continue, Ophelia also didn't want to make him even more embarrassed, so she kept quiet and patiently waited till he spoke again.
