"REQUESTING PERMISSION TO speak, Alpha," Samuel said.

"Be at ease, Samuel. I'm not that angry," the King said with a slight chuckle. At his words, he heard the anxious Captain release a nervous breath.

"Thank you, Alpha. But can I ask how you found out I told Luna everything? I believe Luna didn't tell you."

"I have interrogated criminals and rogues of different kinds. It wasn't hard to notice the truth in both your eyes.

"Besides, what other reason could there be for Ophelia not to ask me any questions about the bite mark I placed on her neck if she wasn't already aware of it?"

Darius let the question hang in the air as he entered the restaurant. At first, Darius wondered why the Governor would want to meet in a restaurant as small as this one.

But when Darius saw the placement of the people in the restaurant as well as smelled the ammunition in the air, he could tell that the restaurant and everyone in it worked for the Governor or wanted to assassinate him.

These only increased his curiosity about what could be the lead Governor Efrain found that was urgent enough to make him go to a place that was anything but safe.

The Earl Delta Captain gave Darius' name to the waitress that approached them and she quickly led them up the stairs. The Governor was seated at a round table, smoking a cigar.

"Alpha King Darius, I'm glad you could make it," Governor Efrain announced on seeing Darius.

With a nod, Darius sat on the couch opposite Governor Efrain's table with Samuel standing beside him.

"Alpha, don't you think something seems off about the Governor today?" The Earl Delta Captain asked through the mind link.

The Alpha King didn't respond but he saw that something, indeed, seemed off about the Governor.

He took one look at the Governor's face from across the table and instantly knew that there was more to the man in front of him than what was presented before his eyes.

"What was so important that you made me leave my mate and come all the way over here?" Darius asked, not bothering to beat around the bush and run around formalities.

"We now know who is behind the beast attacks and the appearance of the superhuman fighters," Governor Efrain said, then sucked in another gust of the toxic air.

The Alpha King slightly leaned forward in interest. "Who is it?"

"Someone who has a personal grudge against you and was aware of your coming to New York City before the news came out," Governor Efrain said, tapping the cigar on the ashtray a few times while blowing out the smoke.

Darius nodded thoughtfully but didn't look the slightest bit disturbed. "I see. Anyway, if the person wants to settle scores, they should fix a meeting or find a way to tell me whatever they want.

"But before that, I will advise that they retrieve their pawns from the streets. This is my last warning."

Governor Efrain chuckled lightly. The sound of his laugh made Darius raise a curious brow. For the life of him, Darius couldn't figure out the joke in what he said.

Suddenly, the Governor sighed while wearing a sympathetic look.

"King Darius, King Darius, do you honestly think they care about these powerless threats of yours?"

The Earl Delta Captain immediately pointed a gun at the Governor.

"Watch your words, Governor Efrain, I will not hesitate to paint these walls with your blood if you dare utter another word of disrespect against the King."

The Alpha King raised his right arm with his palm balled up in a fist. "Fall back, Captain."

Reluctantly, Samuel stepped back but kept his gun pointed at the Governor with no intention to put it away. Governor Efrain kept his smug face on without a hint of regret for the words he said previously.

The Governor sitting in front of Darius was totally different from the one he met before. If Darius did not recognise the scent, he would have assumed that the person before him was an imposter.

A low laugh left the Alpha King's lips as the truth began to unfold before him.

"You knew the truth about the so-called beast in the alley all along, didn't you?

"You also knew who was involved right from the start and not just knowing the person, you are also involved with them. From the start, all you wanted was my attention.

"Initially, you wanted to use your daughter to come close to me until you found out that I had a mate then you used your plan B."

Darius watched the Governor carefully for any sign of remorse. He sighed when he found none. All Darius saw in Governor Efrain's eyes was the confirmation of his words.

"If all you wanted was my attention, then you shouldn't have gone all this way. You didn't have to build a relationship founded on deceit."

"Great minds don't care about sentiments but results. The process is just a temporary situation, it is the results that count."

Governor Efrain' words almost made Darius pity him. He had twisted the lies so much that he had started believing them.

He was now giving himself reasons to back up his actions. Now, even the made-up reasons were enough to convince him that he was right.

Darius chuckled at the ironic situation. "You have no idea how wrong you are, Governor. The process would determine the response to the results.

If word got out that the governor of New York City collaborated with a criminal to set a beast loose on the people he is supposed to be protected, regardless of whether I agree to your demands or not, you will lose the trust of everyone. Would the results be worth it then?"

"How would the people know about that if I'm the one who will save them from the beast?" the underlying evil tone in the Governor's words was becoming more prominent as he spoke.

At that moment, the Alpha King could only wonder how he missed seeing through the Governor's facade.

"What do you want, Governor Efrain?" Darius asked, not wanting to continue any longer.

"You guessed right when you said I wanted your attention-"

Darius cut him off. "Well, now you have it."
