THE CLOSER SHE and Darius got to each other, the more nervous Ophelia became. From sitting beside each other, they moved so close that Ophelia was almost laying on Darius.
He was laying on his back with one hand folded behind his head and the other wrapped around her waist. Ophelia on the other hand was sprawled across his chest, playing with the white bed sheet.
She wasn't sure if it was because of the cold weather or the thoughts running through her head, but she felt anxious and strangely warm.
Perhaps it was the silence that now lingered between them. Whatever it was, Ophelia had to get it out of the way before she gave herself away.
"Are you uneasy, Ophelia?" she heard Darius ask, making her realise that she wasn't as discrete as she thought she was.
"Is it that noticeable?" she asked, not bothering to lie.
"I don't need to have my wolf's senses to hear that your breathing pattern became increasingly fast as time passed.
"It's becoming alarming, mate," Darius said, each word causing his chest to vibrate underneath her.
"I'm fine. Don't worry about me, " Ophelia assured him.
Darius removed his hand from around her waist and used it to hold up her face so she was staring at him.
"Do I make you nervous, mate?" he asked with a smirk playing on his lips.
Scowling, Ophelia shoved his hand off her face and turned back to stare at the bedsheets.
"I didn't know that you were the type of person to be full of themselves," she said.
"Only for you, mate," he teased back and she could almost hear the smugness in his voice.
Ophelia only shook her head at him but didn't bother feeding his arrogance even more.
"But seriously, are you okay, Ophelia?" Darius asked all of a sudden.
Confused at his question, she gave him a curious look and asked, "Why do you ask?"
"It's snowing outside and despite the hot air blasting from the heater, the room is still a little cold. Your body, on the other hand, feels quite hot," Darius responded. "Also, I just noticed that your face looks flushed."
Ophelia pulled herself into a sitting position and felt her forehead and indeed, it was relatively hot. It felt hot enough to be considered a fever.
"Perhaps I caught the flu or something. But that's strange. I've never been sick before. Aunt Isobela would say I have an immune system made of steel. So how can I fall sick all of a sudden? I don't even feel ill."
Darius also got up. "Hold on, let me get Samuel. After spending some time with our pack doctor, I know he'll be able to sniff out what's wrong with you."
As Darius left the room, Ophelia could only curse her luck. She had to get sick right when she was about to get started on her plan. Her sudden illness pretty much flushed her plans down the drain.
In seconds, her fever shot up to an alarmingly high level and it all happened right after Darius left. A burning pain also started below her abdomen, gradually spreading up.
Ophelia didn't want to know how much worse this sickness could get. Sighing, she looked down at her shirt which now clung to her skin. She had long ditched her jacket since the first time she lay on the bed.
Now even the shirt she had on felt too thick for her. It was almost as if the heat was increasing by the second because before she knew it, she was drenched in sweat.
Next, her shirt went off, leaving her in the black jean pants and the black camisole she wore that morning to further protect her lungs from the cold she was feeling.
It felt as though the heat was coming from her insides and that was coupled with the external heat from the heater. Ophelia feared that in a couple of minutes, she would turn into a marshmallow.
She crawled over to the edge of the bed and grabbed the central remote control. She turned off the heater and then turned on the air conditioner.
Ophelia was about to lie back down when the door opened, revealing Darius and Samuel. Samuel's eyes widened on seeing her and he quickly turned around and faced the door.
Darius let out a loud growl on seeing her, too. He quickly threw a blanket over her, drowning her in instant heat.
Ophelia threw the covers off her body and he pulled it back over her again with his eyes daring her to remove it once more.
"What the heck is wrong with you? My body... I'm burning up, Darius!" Ophelia snarled in annoyance but she inched closer to him to see if it would help the heat running through her body and it did dull the pain a little.
Darius looked down at her as she was now glued to his side, giving him a scolding look. Shaking his head, he turned to Samuel who by the way was still facing the wall.
"I will have your eyes if you dare look away from the wall, Captain!" Darius ordered harshly.
"I wouldn't dare!" Samuel quickly replied.
Frowning, Ophelia wondered what their problem was. It wasn't as if she was naked. She was the one hot and they were acting like two oven heads.
"Can you tell what is wrong with your Luna?" Darius asked, his watchful eyes not leaving Samuel for a second, lest Samuel's eyes wandered.
"It seems like the only plausible explanation is that the Luna is in heat," Samuel said, making Ophelia even more confused as she wondered if she looked like a dog to him.
"But she isn't a wolf!" Darius exclaimed, the urgency in his voice made her anxious even though she didn't quite understand where they were headed.
"The only explanation to that circumstance is that she is mated to an Alpha wolf," Samuel said.
