DROPPING THE CIGAR completely into the ashtray, the Governor stood up and came over to stand in front of the Alpha King.

"The person who did all this is someone you know so well. They are closer than you can ever imag-"

Impatiently, Darius cut him off again. "From your words, I assume that you won't tell me who this person is."

When Governor Efrain didn't respond, Darius took that as a yes.

"Then I guess we have nothing more to talk about," Darius said as he got up from his seat, all set and ready to leave when it suddenly clicked.

"But wait... you didn't bring me here just to tell me all this, did you?" The Alpha King asked, narrowing his eyes at the Governor.

At that, the Governor burst into laughter, but as soon as his laughter died down, he spoke up. "I didn't expect you would realise it too soon. Indeed, you deserve your name and reputation."

"It's a diversion, call Keano," Darius mindlinked Samuel with urgency in his voice.

"Don't bother contacting your people outside, Alpha King. Before you call them, it's going to be too late," Governor Efrain informed him.

"What have you done?" Darius asked, pushing down the fear that was threatening to envelop him at the thoughts running through his head.

Governor Efrain shrugged.

"Nothing much, we just took something from you. Something you have been searching for a long time. You never told me that your mate was a gorgeous redhead."

The Alpha King's hands reached out first and grabbed the Governor's neck, squeezing without mercy. Suddenly, men poured out from hidden areas in the room, all pointing their guns at the King.

If Darius wasn't mistaken, there were over fifteen men in total. Ordinary weapons wouldn't kill him but silver bullets would. And, he needed to be alive to save Ophelia.

So, despite his anger, he let Governor Efrain go, and as soon as he did, the choking Governor quickly rushed over to his men.

The Alpha King accessed the men surrounding the Governor If they were there all along, why didn't he sense them?

"Scent masking, Alpha," the Captain said to the King, unknowingly answering his unasked questions.

The art of scent masking was limited to witches from a special coven. If witches were involved then there was a lot more to this than he initially thought.

Darius had suspicions about who could be behind this but his anger outweighed his curiosity.

He forced himself to be calm as he sat down and faced the red-faced Governor who was now sporting his finger marks around his neck.

Governor Efrain, on the other hand, with his tie already loosened, was intensely glaring at Darius.

"Tell me what your master wants."

"I can't say. They will reveal themselves when the time comes. For now, your mate and Beta are unharmed," Governor Efrain said.

Darius chuckled at his own foolishness. How did he not see this coming? He sent Noriel to meet Fiona, not knowing he was sending him into danger.

"I have to hand it to you, your plan was well and carefully thought out," Darius said.

Governor Efrain sat down again. "You have no idea how many times the initial plan changed.

"You were right about me wanting to use Hailey to stand as your mate with the help of magic. Unfortunately for me, though, you have already found your mate."

The Alpha King initially thought the Governor was wise and brave but in the end, he turned out to be incredibly stupid.

THE ROOM OPHELIA woke up in was empty but well-lit

THE ROOM OPHELIA woke up in was empty but well-lit. She was laying in the very centre of the room.

Her head pounded as she tried to recall how she ended up there but could not remember anything after having breakfast. No matter how she thought of it, the only conclusion was that her food had been tampered with.

Standing up from the hard concrete floor, Ophelia looked in front of her in search of an escape route but the room seemed to have been cleared of anything that could have been used for an escape.

Even the door was metal and had no bolts. It was those kinds of doors that could only be opened from one side; the outside.

She turned to look behind her and a gasp left her lips. Laying on the floor was a heavily injured man.

Ophelia hurried over to him as the scent of blood filled her nose, ignoring her confusion about how she could perceive it so strongly.

Somehow, she was able to make out that he was a werewolf. She wasn't sure how she knew it but she was almost certain.

Probably it was Darius' mark that made her senses sharper. Ophelia wondered if Darius was back by now. If he was, he would be worried sick about her whereabouts.

Shaking her head, Ophelia decided to concentrate on helping the man. She would figure out a way to get back to Darius later.

Accessing the physical injuries on the man, Ophelia found the most pressing one to be the nasty gash on his head. It was also the only one she could see.

The blood from the wound was already forming a small puddle on the floor. Ophelia winced at the sight. She had always hated the sight of blood.

She ripped off a long strip from the shirt she had worn that morning. It belonged to Darius and hung a lot too loosely on her small frame.

"I'm sorry, Sir, but I need to stop the bleeding," Ophelia said apologetically to the man who was still knocked out cold.

Tearing out another strip, Ophelia used that to clean the wound then began to wrap the wound with the one she previously tore. As she tied the piece of cloth, she saw his eyes flutter and a groan left his lips.

Ophelia quickly moved away when she saw he was waking up. For all she, he could be a bad person.

Grabbing his head, the man tried to sit up. He opened his eyes and looked around, landing on her. He tilted his head as he studied her.

His brown eyes looked cautious but warm. Suddenly, he lifted his nose and sniffed the air and immediately his eyes landed on her neck where Darius' mark lay.
