He kept his promise.
We were alone on the ice, without any hockey gear. We were wearing our normal clothes and just moved around. Without any stunts, he grabbed my hand and pulled me along, "one shot after another...good...you are getting it." At the corners, he went behind me, holding my waist, "Pull your weight a little to the left...good." Next, he did a few exercises for me to try out.
First was to lift one leg up, sliding on one skate. My balance is not the best, so he kept his hold on me. After a few tries, I managed it without help. Next, Wild wing placed a few pucks on the ice. My assignment was to pick them up without stopping. I leaned down, reaching for one and...Bam...fell flat on my face. Wild wing panicked as he spotted blood, coming out of my nose, "Let's take a break, fixing you up." He feared that I didn't want to continue, looking as my face. To his surprise...I laughed. "Let's try it again!" he placed a hand onto my forehead, "Are you right in the head? You are bleeding." "So what? No pain, no gain!"
Tanya took care of my nose, before going back on the ice.
"Let's forget the 'pick up pucks practice'. Instead, we teach you how to use the stick." Again, he went behind me, holding my hands, "Your hands must be here." In slow motion, he demonstrated how I have to hit a puck, "Now it is your turn." He released me and went a little further away. I raised the stick, took aim and...whoosh...Crash!!!!!!!!!!!
It went over the goal, into the glass.
"I missed..." I said, not daring to look at my duck teacher. At least not until he chuckled, "At least you got the puck this time. Grin would be proud of you." I didn't see any reason to laugh at the damage I caused, "will I have to stay longer now?" Wild wing looked at me concerned, as I was close to tears. He placed his hand on my shoulder, shaking his head, "No, this can happen at any time. Nose dive even managed to destroy two of them last week." I knew he tried to cheer me up, but it is not working. I missed to be out with Anna. At a sunny day in the park, forgetting the job and just watch the clouds pass by. Tears fell down my cheeks. Before I know it, arms were wrapped around me, "Don't be so hard on yourself, we are all right behind you."
"And Anna?"
"She knows about this and is not angry at you."
I wiped my tears away, "Really?
"Really, in fact, she is really proud of you. We are all proud of you."
He kept me a little while longer in his arms, before continuing our exercise. This conversation gave me strength. Knowing that Anna is not mad at me gave me unexpected energy. After three hours, I managed to hit the pucks right and my balance on the skates has improved in the meantime. Wild wing couldn't help but smile at my happy dance. It felt so good to master something! I looked towards the leader of the mighty ducks, as something began to beep.
"He looked onto his device and shouted over, "N/A, I have to go. We continue this another time!"
Without any explanation, he left me on the ice...alone.
