Chapter 53| Silence is Dangerous

Everyone was quiet as we pulled up to Alexandria. I keep in mind what Rick said about Woodbury and Terminus. As I got out I listened everything was silent. Then there was children laughter, a small smile formed on my lips. I climbed out of the RV and stared up at the gates. Then something rattled beside us and Daryl was quick to shoot his crossbow grabbing the raccoon. The gates to Alexandria opened and we all looked in. I tried to hold back my laughter, this begin our first impression. We are all pointing weapons at a raccoon. I lowered my gun and followed the rest of the group inside.
I was stun and zoned out of what everyone else was saying this place looked like a neighborhood, like a home, it actually looked normal safe. But how could that be? I watched kids run around playing tag, one stopped and looked at me funny. I smiled and waved. The little kid looked horrified as if he saw a ghost then I realized I waved with my fake hand. I gave him a sad smile before continuing on with the group. Everywhere there was people. They where normal or what use to be normal. My mind was spinning and I was so confused. Someone nudged my shoulder and I looked to see Daryl setting his guns down on a cart. I looked down at all my weapons and started putting them all on.
"Is there any way to get the knife out of..." The lady trailed off looking at my fake hand with a pocket knife sticking out.
"Oh, um." I looked over to Carl who gave me a small smile and quickly came over to help take it out.
I gave him a small smile in return but it wasn't much. I was too amazed at the sudden changed. There's no moans, I'm not walking around in the forest I'm in a town. A real neighborhood with real people.
Pretty soon I was sitting in a fancy chair in a fancy house with the lady Deanna supposably the leader of the group.
"Do you mind if I record this?" She asked setting up her camera.
"Um go ahead." I said unsure off my answer.
I keep looking around. Trying to find something out of the ordinary like the governor's secret room where he held a walker little girl or a butcher area. This place couldn't be amazing it had to have it's secrets and I was going to find them.
"So that group you came in with, did you know any before this?"
"A few." I nodded.
"Related to any, mom, brother?"
"Daryl's my uncle Dustin my step brother."
She nodded.
"What about your hand? What did you do to it?" She said staring at it.
"I got bit."
"We have a doctor here I'm sure he can fix it up." She said smiling.
"Why do you let people in?"
"Your group is the first we have let in from behind the walls. We have picked up a few strays but your group is the first group."
"So nobody in here has really lived out in that world?"
She shook her head.
"We have runners tho, that get us supplies. They have seen plenty of things. We have lost some people. It's a horrible world out there."
"You have no idea." I mumbled.
"Tell me about it. How you feel about this world." She said leaning back in her seat.
"What are you a therapist?"
"No, I want to know your point of view."
I was silent for for a minute. I didn't want to give away too much.
"Those things out there, those dead things, those walkers. There monsters they take things away from you they take away your loved ones, your life, your humanity, they take away you. This world we live in does that too you it makes you into a new person a monster. You are forced to do things you never would of done before, say things you never would of said before. Your forced to make hard decisions wether to go left or right, stay or leave, who to save and who to leave. Every day when you open your eyes you wonder how much longer you have. How much longer do you have to fight to see another day to see the light. Sometimes you don't even know why your still fighting but you are. Sometimes you don't understand why you haven't giving up yet. Killing becomes another senses, survival is your top priority. You are not the same as you where before and this town these people haven't experience that. When this place gets over run and it will, where will they go? What will they do? They will be shocked. Have no clue what's going. They won't know how to kill, they won't be able to defend for themselves and soon die. Only the strongest make it out. That is my point of view about this whole thing." I said leaning back in the chair.
She nodded crossing her right leg over her left.
"So you think I should let your group in?"
"I think it would be a wise choice being if some strong group came they could take this place down easy. I've seen it happen."
"Well Josie, I'm glad I had a chat with you go ahead and head over to your house." She said holding her hand out.
I stared at it, it was almost foreign. I slowly lifted my right hand or well my only hand and shook hers. She gave me a sweet smile. It reminded me of a teacher or secretary. I gave her a small one in return and headed out the door.
Daryl was waiting outside for me. He had his 'interview' before me.
"What did ya think?" He asked
"I think this is a bunch of bullshit." I responded.
He grunted in agreement.
"Just keep your guard up."
I nodded as we walked up to steps to the house.
"Hey JD you wanna come with us too meet some off the others kids?" Garrett asked.
I looked at him and then Carl, shaking my head I headed upstairs and looked out the window. The walls where tall but not tall enough. I could barley see over them from the upstairs window. Then a girl came into view she used the support beams to climb up and over the fence. Curious I snuck out the back door and followed her through the trees. I eventually lost her and gave up. I continued to walk through the forest taking in the beauty of the trees. The only thing that ruined it was the moans that soon filled the air. I reached down for my knife only to find nothing.
"Damn it." I said barley above a whisper.
I forgot to bring it. I had left it on the counter. I started heading towards the walls when a walker grabbed my arm. I was startled but didn't scream turning around to pushing it up against a tree. I hit it with my fake hand.
"Damn it." I mumbled remembering I had to take out the knife.
I felt it's nails start to dig into my skin. Quickly backing away, I looked down at my upper arm. Three scratches.
"Shit." I mumbled.
If someone saw it they would ask questions and no one needs to know I'm immune. Only Carl, Michonne and me know and it's staying that way. Maybe I'll tell Daryl but that's it. The walker came at me and I looked around for a weapon finding none I ran towards the walls only to run into two more. I turned to see more coming up behind me. When I turned back to face the others one dropped dead followed by another and another tell they all lay down dead. I looked around and my eyes landed on Dustin.
I hadn't talked to him in for ever.
"Thanks." I said walking over to him.
He shrugged.
"Why you out here?"
He sighed.
"I'm just over whelmed. I guess. Maybe even in a depressed stage."
"Because of Beth?"
He nodded.
"Ya, that's part of it. Coming to Alexandria just made me realize that we where once like them. I mean those people in there don't know anything about being out here. They have had a normal life and we, we haven't. I'm 17 I'm suppose to be parting in my junior year. I'll be an adult soon. And now I'm just wondering when I'm gonna die, how I'm gonna die? Who's gonna die next?"
I sat down on a rock as he leaned against a tree.
"And Beth? How you handling that?"
"Beth was a distraction at the prison I actually felt normal. The prison was amazing it almost felt right. Beth held me down from doing something crazy like opting out."
I stiffened at the sound of opting out.
"But you wouldn't? Would you?"
He was quiet. Silence is never a good thing.
"I don't know Josie. I mean Beth forgot about me everything we had done, everything we told each other. She doesn't remember. But I do. I remember every damn thing and it hurts. I just wish I could forget it. Like she did."
"Well did you not tell her you two where a thing or are a thing how ever you wanna put it."
"Na, she's still hooked on Jimmy." he said not making eye contact with me.
His eyes where glossed over he was gone.
"So you never told her?"
"No I did but she let me down easy."
I chuckled.
And a small smile spread across his face.
"Isn't that what you said you did to every girl you ever dated?"
His smile grew.
"There wasn't enough of me to go around. I had to pick."
I rolled my eyes.
"You where a player, that's what you where." I said resting my head on my hands.
"I was no such thing, I just had the looks." He said doing a weird eyebrow thing wiched made me laugh.
"You on the other hand," he chuckled looking down.
"What about me."
"You where lucky if I guy commented your hair."
I threw a stick at him.
"That was so not how it was. In fact Charlie Lancaster had a crush on me."
He laughed.
"Oh did he?"
I nodded.
"I mean he wasn't bad looking but not my type."
"Oh but Carl is."
"Carl is a douche bag." I mumbled.
"Is that your code word for amazingly cute." He smirked.
I rolled my eyes.
"Your a douche." I said getting up.
"Thank you." He said coming up beside me.
We walked in silence until we got to the walls.
"How did you do that?" He asked.
"Do what?" I said climbing the wall.
"I was in a really depressing mood and you some how cheered me up."
I shrugged and jumped down onto the grass.
"Are you coming to the welcome party they are throwing for us?"
"No." I scoffed.
"Why, it's a party for you, you have to come."
"Why would I came to some lame party?"
"You could get high with me?" He offered.
"Tempting but I'm a crazy drunk apparently."
He laughed.
"But crazy drunks are the best drunks."
