Chapter 54| Smile

"Hey JD you coming to the party tonight?" Garrett asked as he caught up to me.
"No." I said.
"How come." He said going to slip his hand into mine.
I pulled it away ignoring his confused looks. I don't understand how he doesn't understand that I don't like him. We are over and he can't get it threw his thick skull of his that we are.
I headed inside the house and to my bag. Pulling out a pair of clothes I headed up stairs to take a shower. I don't know how long we are gonna be here but I'm taking advantage over the showers. I pulled off my clothes and played with the water to get a perfect temperature. I glanced down at my fake hand. I messed with the bolts and got it off. I winced at the sight. I wonder if the doctor here could do anything for it. I stepped into the shower and let the water roll down my body. I wasn't use to not being able to rub shampoo in without two hands. It was actually harder. But it wasn't impossible. I rubbed soap down my body. There was not one speck of dirt on my body, that was new. Even tho I spent yesterday and today in the forest. I would probably end up back there anyway. I didn't fit in this place called Alexandria. I just stood in the shower letting the warm water engulf me. It felt nice. I sighed knowing I couldn't use as much water as I would like. So getting out and drying off my body I threw on my clothes and went across the hall to put my towel in a laundry basket.
I looked up out the window and saw someone climbing the fence. They really need better fences. At first I figured it was that one girl Enid I think her name was. But when the hood they where wearing fell down and I saw bright red hair I knew otherwise.
'What was Abby doing over the walls?'
She can barley handle herself in here. I quickly went downstairs slipping on my shoes someone grabbed my elbow. I looked up to see Garrett looking down at me with worried eyes.
"We need to talk." He said softly.
"There's nothin to talk about." I said shrugging and tugging on my elbow but he wouldn't release.
"JD, I really like you." He trailed off. "Don't you like me?"
"Ya Garrett I like you but not in that way. I mean I use too but." I let my eyes wander anywhere but him.
"But Carl."
"No, Carl- I started.
"Save it Josie." He said throwing back my elbow which caused me to stumble backwards.
"Garrett." I said going to grab his shoulder.
He dodged it and opened the door.
"I get it Josie you like Carl not me." He said threw gritted teeth.
I didn't plan on him being mad at me. I need to find Beth. I headed down the stairs and on the sidewalk. Luckily I found her talking to some other lady. I waited as patiently as I could but I couldn't wait any longer.
"Um, Beth." I cut into the conversation.
The women she was talking too smiled at me.
"You can go get your things and come over when ever you like." She said patting Beth on the shoulders.
Beth smiled at her and turned to me glaring.
"Um, sorry." I said shyly.
She rolled her eyes and spun on her heel towards the houses.
"Beth what are you doin? What did that lady mean?" I asked but she didn't respond instead storming up the stairs and found her bag putting her things into it.
"Beth what are you doin? I kind of need your advice."
She spun her head around. Anger filled her eyes and her eyes started to water almost as if she was about to cry.
"I'm never helping you again." She barked.
I looked at her confused.
"I'm sorry I interrupted your conversion but are you going to stay with that lady?"
"Ya cause she's way better than you and this group."
"What? What about Maggie? Your sister?! You can't leave her?"
"She's friends with the people who killed my father!" She said her voice cracking.
"What Beth, who told you that?" I said.
"It doesn't matter who told me, you lied to me. You all lied to me you killed my mother, brother and dad. And you didn't even have the guts to tell me. I don't even know why I was with you people."
"But Beth we never killed your dad, or your mom and brother. Your mom and brother got bite back at the farm. Don't you remember. Your dad was killed by the governor not us."
She ignored me turning back to her bag. She zipped it up and threw it over her shoulder.
"If you need me I'll be at Jessie's house." She said and walked out the door.
Anger boiled up inside of me, Beth was the closet thing I had to having a piece of the real world and now she's turned on me? Who told her? I had one name in mind. Abby. I stormed out of the house and went behind climbing up over the walls. I walked for what felt like hours until I finally heard talking. I hide behind a tree and peered around the corner. There was too many trees in the way to see who was talking so I quickly but quietly climbed the tree. Peering down I saw Enid and Carl.
My heart dropped. Carl was talking to a girl and that girl was not me. I wasn't mad when he talked to Abby cuz Abby had no chance with Carl. But the way Carl's cheeks turned a rosy pink when he talked to her as they leaned up against a tree trunk and she carved into a stump. The way he looked at her. You could always tell when someone likes someone by the look in there eyes. My sadness was quickly replaced with anger.
Anger for Abby for telling Beth false things, anger for Enid talking to Carl. Anger for everything. Then suddenly they both jumped up and she lead him to a tree that was carved into. There was barley any room for the two of them so they where only inches apart which made my blood boil. Why was I feeling this way? Why was I jealous? I had let Carl go? He has every right to hang out with another girl. I let him go. I was so stupid.

I was too busy staring at them I didn't notice the many walkers that where below me walking threw the forest floor. I waited for them to disappear before jumping down and running before they saw me or before I threw up over the sight of Carl and her. Which ever one came first. I keep running until the walls came into view. Until I hit something hard.
I fell down and looked up at what I had ran into.
"Dustin, what are you doing out here?" I asked slowly standing up.
"I should be asking you the same thing." He said.
"I asked first." I smirked.
He rolled his eyes.
"Just needed some fresh air. That town is weird I'm not use to it."
I nodded not completely believing him.
"I was trying to find Abby. She climbed over the walls I wanted to know where she was going." I replied.
Dustin shifted his weight to his right leg and looked a little uncomfortable.
"Did you see her?" I asked
"Uh, ya." He said quietly.
"Well what was she doing? I mean she can barley handle herself with a group she will get herself killed out here."
"Actually she came to meet me."
"What, why?"
"Cause I like her."
"Dustin I've known you for the longest time and she is not your type. You told me you would never go out with a girl like that ever!"
"I know but having Beth turn me down I just I don't know." He said not looking me in the eye. He is lie I know Dustin and his lie.
"Speaking of Beth someone told her that Rick killed her dad and now she hates our whole group so she moved in with some lady named Jessie."
"The one who's son is Ron?"
"Ron, I don't even know who that is."
"Have you not talked to anyone?"
I shook my head.
"Well come to the party I'll introduce you to him. His a pretty fun kid." Dustin said turning to head over to the wall.
I followed not saying anything. He was hiding something I knew he was but what?
*****
"You are great at that video game." A kid said to Carl as I walked up to them.
"Hey." I said quietly.
Carl's eyes lite up at the site of me which caused the butterflies in my stomach to grow.
"Hey JD." He said happily.
I smiled but not because I was happy, I smiled because Carl was happy because I haven't seen him this way in a long time. I smiled because he called me JD too. I smiled because of Carl.
"Mikey, Ron this is Josie. Josie this is Mikey and Ron." Carl said pointing at who was who.
I smiled at them and went to wave quickly realizing I only hand on hand I tucked my hand away.
"Whoa, what happened to your hand!" Mikey said.
I bite my lip holding it up to show them.
"I um, got bite. So they cut it off to keep the infection from spreading."
"That's sweet." Ron said as he examined my fake hand.
"So what's this slot here?" Mikey asked pointing to where I usually have a pocket knife.
I looked at Carl, waiting for him to explain his contraption.
"You put a knife here, so you can kill the walkers. And right here."
He went on explaining how it all worked making sure to mention that he is the one who built it.
"Can you take it off?" Ron asked.
"Ya, but it's pretty ugly underneath." I said biting my lip.
"I'm sure my dad could fix your stub, better." Ron said.
"So your dad's the doctor than?"
"Ya, you should come around some time and get it looked at make sure it's not infected or anything like that."
I smiled.
"Ya I guess I'll have too."
He smiled at me.
"Um, Josie." Carl said and I turned my head to look at him.
He grabbed my hand which sent shivers up my spin.
"Will be right back, I gotta show JD something." He said and pulled me threw the crowd until we where outside.
The stars and moon the only light out. He dug around in his pocket until he pulled out an object. I couldn't tell what it was until the light shined on it. I looked at him confused as I took it into my hands. Looking back up at Carl who had a huge grin on his face. I couldn't help but smile. Because out of everything that had happened today Carl was the one thing that made me actually, genuinely, smile.
